Hi
I've dealt with cancer on two occasions. Bladder and Prostate, so you could say I'm a veteran. Now, as I explained recently I only have one kidney and have a slow growing cyst that has been under observation for over 8 years.
The situation changed last year when the cyst started growing (I have mentioned this before), now at 3.8 cm. My consultant wanted a further scan in 3 months, but after a chat my CSN (highly qualified) has indicated that she wants a partial nephrectomy done (possibly cryogenic). She has my full support and the MDT are meeting next week (it would have been this week, but there's been a Bank Holiday).
I'm happy for the procedure, it's a great relief, but I started to get thoughts of: "what if the team say no." Unlikely I know, given my CSN's experience and I imagine she has made some preliminary moves, well she indicated that was she was going to do. Just started a little anxiety out of the blue.
Any similar experiences?
Anxiety is an all apparent feeling going through our different cancer journeys .i can relate in that aspect.i seem to get it with needles quite a bit and visits to hospital although i know the NHS have and are fantastic.
i hope someone can help you in your exact question and I'd like to wish you well in yours.
Hi
Thanks for the reply. I think my main concern is that the rest of the team may over rule my CSN, which is unlikely. I'm a prime candidate and my kidney function is good, but for some unknown reason I'm letting bother me too much.
Totally understand.
My mind tells me similar....what if u can't get the robotic partial nephrectomy...etc, etc ...as in another town...then the other side of my head gives the logical response.
Keep on it, establishing contact with people dealing with your care.controlling what we can helps anxiety.
Hi Ianw,
im sure they will have had their meeting now and presented you with their offer. I had a left nephrectomy in 2021 and it went well they took my left adrenal gland too ( seems they need to due to positioning) I was monitored then and felt really good as nothing was seen. Then I had an ultrasound for an unrelated concern ( that was fine) but the noticed a mass on my right kidney. I was fast tracked for ct and consultant appt. Where they noted that my ‘mass’ was first visible in 2023 and this wasn’t picked up but the other consultant in 23 or 24.
anyway getting to your point I was offered two options of cryotherapy (ablation) or robotic partial nephrectomy with either an option and offering similar outcome. I opted for the cryotherapy and it is a different world from a nephrectomy. You in and out in a day and back to normal in a week to two weeks. So if this is offered it’s worth a consideration I have lost 6 points on the gfr and while I had all appt for dialysis etc to prepare me for the worst at the moment that’s not needed. I have my first follow up scan happening next month.
for me this was less invasive and the better choice. I hope all went well or goes well for you.
Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I had a face to face at the Royal Free. Surgery isn't an option as it could cause too much damage. However, the Consultant, a Mr Bex, said that no one dies from this type of tumour, but an intervention was needed as it could impact of my kidney function. Luckily a Radiographic Consultant from UCH was on site and agreed to see at Mr Bex's request.
Very nice chap. He also confirmed that the Tumour wasn't life threatening, but again, an intervention was necessary. The upshot is a biopsy followed by cryotherapy ablation, or, if the route was difficult, ablation by targeted radiotherapy. Apparently they use the biopsy incision to target the tumour.
The impression I get is that cryotherapy is likely, but I'm happy that either will work except that radiotherapy requires more than one session. Again, it was emphasised that it won't kill me and is more than treatable.
