Hi, I'm waiting to hear from the hospital about a date for doing my partial nephrectomy and cholecystectomy.

How long have you waited between diagnosis and surgery?

  • Hi I was diagnosed early September and I’m having a partial nephrectomy on 10 November.

  • Hi LJT

Thank you for replying. I was diagnosed towards end of Sept - it's frustrating not knowing when my surgery will be. Especially as Christmas is approaching and I daren't make any plans!

Wishing you well and please let me know how it goes!

    Regards

    Soki

  • Will do. I’ll post on here once I’m up to it!
hope you don’t have to wait too long to get a date.

  • Good morning. I appreciate this is an older post but how long did you end up waiting for surgery? My dad had his ct scan early Feb and only got diagnosis last week and now has to wait until 3rd July to meet surgeon before his op! Is this normal? His cancer is T3A no mo but I’m worried it will spread further in the time he’s waiting. It has only just started growing into the vein. Admittedly he is 80 but still. They recommend full removal of left kidney.

I hope you have had your op and are recovering well x

  • I don’t think that’s unusual really though of course the waiting is very stressful. Kidney tumours are slow growing apparently. I had my op in mid November and am doing pretty well. Wishing your dad a good recovery x

  • Ok that’s reassuring. Well I keep reading they are slow growing but they haven’t biopsied or anything and of course my mind works overtime worrying that this delay will make things worse. I think the lack of control over all aspects is just the worst but I guess we need to trust the process. Glad to hear you are doing well! X

  • They don’t seem to do biopsies until after the op. I think they pretty much know from scans what they’re dealing with. Chin up. I’m sure your dad is in good hands x

  • My surgeon explained why he didn't want to do a biopsy pre-surgery despite the fact that there just might be a 10-15% chance mine is not a RCC. He said that if he biopsies first, if it is cancerous then the act of disturbing the lesion to biopsy, could cause cells to escape and spread elsewhere. It made sense how he explained it. So with an 85% chance it is cancerous, I decided to not take the gamble and to let him remove the lesion.

Mine was 2.7cm and when it's that size, they apparently take the lesion out in a sort of 'sac' as I understand it, to limit or avoid the risk of cells escaping.
