Hi all

my kidney was removed in February I’m currently on my second lot of antibiotics in 6 weeks because of another chest infection. Has anyone else been ill like this close together? I also keep getting pains where my kidney used to be, has anyone had that before? I went to my local walk in centre on Thursday night because my temperature was so high and I got the antibiotics, mentioned about the pain and they brushed me off saying it’s not possible because i don’t have a kidney

  • Hello, sorry to hear you have been poorly. I personally haven't had pain where my kidney used to be but I'm sure I have seen others mention this and I think I've read about it too. Those people shouldn't have dismissed your concerns but I expect they were just really busy and they are not the experts in post-nephrectomy issues either! If you are not due to see anyone from urology any time soon, why don't you see if you can call or email the specialist nurse you were assigned previously? Or maybe use the 'Ask an expert' facility on here (Macmillan)? You sound like you need some reassurance - don't we all at times when we get random aches and pains and wonder if they are random or not?! I hope you are otherwise recovered well from your op. Take care of yourself.

  • Hello Tryingtohope

I am sorry to hear that you have had another chest infection after having your kidney removed in February.

I think the best thing to do about the pain where your kidney was is to contact the hospital where you had the surgery and explain to them what is happening. They would be best placed to answer any questions and would also be the experts. Alternatively maybe your GP is able to help. You could also give the Support Line a call today (they are there until 8pm) and speak to one of the nurses.

I think sometimes after having a big surgery, our immune systems are affected and that can mean we can pick up things more easily. I certainly did and also with the number of appointments at the hospital things were always doing the rounds.

I hope that your chest infection is settling now.

    Jane
