1¹¹I have kidney cancer diagnosed 2 years' ago. Over the 2 years I've had 2 telephone calls and one face to face meeting with a junior doctor.
In November I had my latest ct scan and was given a date for a telephone appointment on 15/12/22.
I asked the consultant's secretary if I could have a face to face appointment instead.
She said she didn't know and would get back to me.
I heard nothing and thought this meant "no". I sat and waited by my phone for 2 hrs and nothing happened.
The next day I phoned the hospital only to be told this was my fault for not turning up. I explained what had happened but got knowhere.
I now have to wait for a face to face appointment on 27/01/23. This has stressed me our really badly and I feel abandoned.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to deal with this please?
Many thanks.xx
Oh no, I really feel for you. Why on earth didn't the dr just phone you when you weren't in the waiting room - it's not rocket science! Definitely a shocker from the admin team there. I've had appt letters which have had "telephone appt" handwritten on them and also letters re-sent out to change from in-person to phone. I assume you've had so many phone calls because you were engaged during lockdown. I can appreciate your frustration. I got fed-up with phone consultations in 2022. I really felt like a number and the consultant was deciding whether I was "allowed" on premise instead of a more collaborative decision based on how I was feeling about it. I had a rant and I always go in now. Trip out, escape him indoors, body language, better audio etc etc
After you explained the sec should have acknowledged the mix-up and offered a quick call from the consultant.
After the utter annoyance on your behalf for doing nothing wrong, my immediate thought is that in the timespan of NHS waits, 27th Jan is 2 weeks away. I thought they would have found a space in next weeks' clinic for you though, considering. I've always found medical secretaries really nice and understanding. I hope I don't meet yours :-(
Aww thank you for your support lovely.
the other thing, in February last year when I had a face to face appointment the Doctor said he would send a letteAfter 6 Weeks nothing.
I phoned and the secretary said we don't normally send copies of letters to patients as they've been been told what's going on.
She then said she'd have to ask if I was allowed to see the letter
She did send it and it detailed the growth of my tumour and a timetable for action. I knew None of tihs.
