Hi there, I'm a newbie. I'm a 40 yo diagnosed with RCC just over a month ago. It was found by chance. Thankfully they've caught it early. I'm having a radical nephrectomy (left) at the Churchill in Oxford in a few days. I would love to hear some positive stories, any general advice, any tips on what to take for the hospital stay, or post op advice. Any wisdom on how to cope with a one year old during recovery would also be great. Thanks so much. Wishing you all the best, with thanks.
Hi Hen,
And welcome to the community I am pleased to hear that you are sorted as far as the operation, I would only advise that you rest as much as you can after op and when it is over that you have baggie clothes, slip on shoes and a pillow or cushion to hold on to your tummy for the journey home, the one thing I cannot advise on is your baby because I do know they need lots of care and attention so hopefully you will have family and friends to help you with the baby.
I know it is a very worry time when you hear the word cancer but I will say there is a great bunch of guys on this community who will be able to help you on your journey, they maybe able to help with your one year old as they might have been in the same situation as you.
As for your hospital stay it all depends on how long they keep you in, I don’t know how long it will take you to heal as we are all different and mend at different times, I do know you will have a swollen stomach, the worst for me was the injections you have to have for a month after the op to stop blood clots I found them the worst my tummy was hard sore swollen and I was looking forward to finishing them you may find them easier.
We do have a few on the site who have just had their operation so they maybe to able to help you more, I had my left kidney removed in December 2019 my scar did heal really quickly as my wound was glued so I did not have staples or stitches to worry about, I went into hospital on Monday 30th and was out on the Friday, after op I spent three days in ICU and one on an ordinary ward, I wish you luck for your op and hope you will be fine after I look forward to your next post stay safe and good luck Sandy xx
Sandy,
Thank you so much for your welcome and for taking the time to share your wisdom and advice - it is greatly appreciated :-) I shall definitely heed your advice on the loose clothing, slip on shoes and pillow for the trip home.
I wish you love and light on your journey and so hope your latest scan brings good news.

Hi Hen, Suffolkflyer here. You have just heard from Sandy one of our stars, with wonderful and sage words of advice. Listen to her and others and hopefully will benefit from their experiences. I can't help with a female conception of how matters will be for you being a 77 yr old man. I do know we all have vastly different experiences. Embrace the advice you are offered. Do keep in touch with us, we always listen and offer our support, as l do now. Love to you. Adrian aka
Hi Hen ( Sandy and Adrian too) x Welcome to our group. I had my radical nephrectomy on April 28th , just gone. I can honestly say it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be….. waiting for it was the worst part for me
I had it done on the Thursday and went home on the Saturday evening
My advice s to try to take a cushion for on the way home to hold over your thewound, helps cushion any bumps ( really good advice that I was given on this site). Listen to your body and if you need to rest then do so. ( Hard with a little one, I am sure……maybe family could help here?)
Do post on the site…..most of us have surgery, or other treatment and although everyone is different, we do know something of what you are experiencing….and most of all we care and want to uplift each other.
Big hugs, Jules xx
Hi Hen, I had a radical nephrectomy not long after I had my second child; he's 20 now. My daughter was 5 at the time, and I just took my time in recovering, and with it being open surgery and stitches. I found it useful to have a v-cushion, providing comfort and support when sat/sleeping.

Hi! I’ve just had a radical nephrectomy 5 weeks ago now. I was so nervous but honestly recovering a lot better than I thought I would! I took my own pillow to the hospital which was a nice comfort, loose nighties and big knickers haha! Post op definitely take it easy, as much as you can with a one year old! Ask for help and get plenty of rest. I really hope it all goes well:)

I had the same op 42 days ago. All went very smoothly but the recovery will take time so child care could be v tricky for you. The gas inflation made me vey sore for a few weeks but otherwise no problems at all. I can scarcely believe whats happened. Apparently it takes about 12 weeks to really get back on an even keel.
