Hello, I’ve just got a date to finally have my tumour removed with my kidney! I’m worrying like crazy, just wanted to see if anyone else has had this operation and how they found it, and any tips for recovery please:)
Hi Hannah1996,
And welcome to the group you will find quite a few of us have had a kidney removed, we have all been in your shoes the worry and not sleeping the one thing I will say to you is to try to stay strong and ask all the questions you need to ask, there is always someone who will be able to help you, do you have family and friends to help you, try to keep fit as it does help with recovery the thing is everyone is different and we all recover differently I will say that when it is over and you are coming home make sure you have loose clothes and a cushion to put on the tummy to help with the journey home, do you know what sort of operation you are having, open cut or key hole.
Try to stay calm and keep as updated with your progress Sandy
Hello Hannah 1996,
and as Sandra 55 has said welcome to the group.I agree with everything that has been said…but also wanted to say that for me the operation as bad as I thought it would be. The worst bit was the waiting to have the operation done.
I will try to find a post that I did the night before as it may help you.
Keep us posted how you are feeling before and after….we are here with you.
big hugs Jules xx
Well said Jules, wise reflectikns as always. Take care. Adrian
I concur with Sandra 55 with her positive comments. Had my kidney and tumour removed 17 years ago trouble free but unfortunately a secondary came back and I had further surgery, radiotherapy and am now on infusion treatment. The operation itself originally was a normal surgery not keyhole and although it took a while to feel better I never got any infection at all so fingers crossed the same for. Think nice thoughts and you will be fine xxx
Hello, Hannah
I had a radical nephrectomy in July 2020. I was in hospital only a couple of days, and was amazed at how quickly I recovered. The scars have healed well, especially in comparison to the hysterectomy I had years ago. I found that I soon began toddling about, walking a bit more each day. I was provided with painkillers by the hospital, but all I needed was paracetamol. Now I go for CT scans every six months but I could almost forget that I had a nephrectomy. My advice is to find some soft, easy to put on clothes that won’t rub, for your discharge from hospital. Slip on shoes mean no bending. Best wishes and do let us know how you get on.
Thank you:) I’ve got amazing support so plenty of people to help! I’m only 26 so hoping my age and fitness is on my side haha! It’s open cut, my tumour is very big so can’t do keyhole:( thanks for replying x
Good to hear that you have support and to know that age and fitness will be on your side. It is natural to worry - it kind of hangs over you - but I hope your op and recovery will go as smoothly as mine did. Good luck.
Hi Hannah,
I too have had a nephrecomy about 9 weeks ago. I am very nearly fighting fit now.
The op went very well. The day i had the op was late on so i slept that first night so i was virtually unconscious till the morning. Though i did wake a couple of times in the night for my vitals to be checked...oooeeerrr !! I was uncomfortable rather than in much pain. Moving about the bed/turning over was difficult and took ages...lol.
On leaving hospital i needed looking after. I kept getting very tired which is normal apparently. I stayed in bed for a about two weeks looked after by my very caring wife. After 3 weeks i gradually began going for walks. Laughably my first walk was about 200 yards. But gradually i was able to walk further and further. 'Listen to your body' i was told. And mine kept saying 'oi...what's the rush ?'
A godsend for me was the extra soft pillows my wife had bought to have scattered over the bed. Hiccups, sneezing, coughing and burping all pulled on my stomache so i was able to grab a soft pillow and hold it tight to my tum as i hiccuped, sneezed, etc. This helped greatly.
You being younger....god you are young..lol you should recover quicker than i did. I am reasonably fit and healthy but i am also 61.and therefore slower to get moving fluidly again.
Easiest thing in the world to say is 'don't worry' and people said it to me. I know you are going to worry though it's a natural thing. I hope things go well for you. I hope too that you'll post your progress on here so we can all cheer you on. There are some real smashers on here.
Before you know it you'll be a nephrectomite as many of us are. How far off is your date ?
Yours...Del.
