Low kidney function after kidney removal

Hi I had my left kidney removed last July and had my follow up CT scan a couple of weeks ago and thankfully I am now clear of cancer after a roller coaster of emotions.

Unfortunately I had a bit of a knock back when the doctor phoned me this week to say that my remaining kidney is functioning at less than 60% and has been for a while, I don’t whether this is common or not. The doctor has put me on some Ramipril 1.25mg capsules to see if they help increase my kidney function and he is going to keep a close eye on me with regular blood tests.

If anyone else has been put on this medication how did you get on? Is this why I am feeling really tired and bloated?

I would really appreciate any advice or experiences anyone has had.

Thank you Blush

  • Hi

That's great to read that you're clear of cancer Slight smile

I'm not on Ramipril, so don't have any experiences with this drug to share with you, but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet.

I searched the group for previous posts which mention it and found these which you could have a look through. If they don't provide you with the information that you're looking for you could post your question in the ask a nurse section of the online community and one of the specialist nurses will respond within 3 working days.

I'm 'tagging' into my reply to you as he was one of the people who mentioned Ramipril and I know that he's an active member of this group so might be able to pop on and tell you about his experiences.

  • Thanks for your reply.  I’ve had to call the doctors today as I suffered from blurred vision this morning and could hardly see my computer screen, the doctor thinks the medication maybe causing low blood pressure,  I’ve got to stop taking them for a few days and then restart with the Ramipril.

  • Sorry to hear that but you did the right thing in contacting your doctor. I hope your vision returns to normal quickly.

  • Hi Sandy thanks for the reply, I’m back on the tablets and taking my blood pressure every day, it is quite low and feeling tired and shaky, I’m going to try it for a few weeks and see if it improves and I’m hoping my kidney function will improve too.
    Are you still on medication?
    Thanks Denise

  • Hello just joined this forum. I had my left kidney removed in November last year and I too have been told my urine results are lower but not to worry. Before surgery the result was 60 and after surgery 35. This is based on something called the GFR ( glomular filtration rate) . Hope this helps .

  • Hi Margaret, thanks for your reply.  I’ve had to stop taking the tablets and I’ll need another blood test in 3 months to check the levels.  I’ve started drinking Nettle Tea (doesn’t taste that great!) but I’ve read that its good for your kidney function, so I’ll see if it that helps. Hope you’ve recovered well from your surgery last year.

    Take care

  • I am on Ramipril, but then again I was before the nephrectomy - for blood pressure. My GP keeps an eye on things and I report my blood pressure every now and then and go for annual kidney function blood tests. I haven’t had any problem with the tablets, no side effects that I am aware of. Best wishes. Hope the Ramipril works for you.
