Kidney cancer and its metastases

My partner had RCC right kidney in 2013, (removed), then a RCC tumour on his right adrenal gland in 2018 (removed), RCC tumour in his pancreas 2021 (20% of the pancreas removed + his spleen)) and it has now spread to his left adrenal gland.

The first cancer was picked up on a CT scan after he had blood in his wee twice on one day and never again, nor did he have any other symptoms. All the subsequent tumours were picked up on CT scans, no symptoms.

The hospital was pushing for SABR radiotherapy on the adrenal tumour but then decided the tumour is too close to his only kidney. They considered a less successful radiotherapy, which he declined. Surgery has been offered and accepted, which will be open (and therefore more risky than keyhole) as his pancreatectomy was open surgery. CT scan tomorrow morning, with a view to surgery taking place in February.

He has built himself back up beautifully since surgery in July 2021 and is strong and well (except for the tumour which has no symptoms).

Has anybody else had this pattern or similar? How are you doing? I am grateful for your time. Carla

  • Hi Carla

I'm just popping in to 'bump' your post back to the top of the discussion list as I can see you haven't had any replies.

  • Thank you. That's really good of you. I can't believe my partner is the only one...? Best wishes Carla

  • Hi CeeJ7,

Sorry no one has been in touch, I have not had the same as your husband and I am sure if someone did they would have answered, the only problem might be that the ones you need might be away or not been online to see your post, I had my left kidney and spleen removed December 2019, the problem I had was that I had cancer in both kidneys, I am on treatment at the moment because it went from my kidney into my lungs and now it has spread to my liver, I know there was a chap who had his spread from his kidney to his pancreas but he has gone on to that community, I hope you hear from someone soon.

  • Hello Sandra,  thanks for your reply and I am sorry to hear what you're going through. Hopefully, your treatment is working and you are feeling okay, better than okay I hope.

Really, I'm thankful that nobody else has had it happen to them in this pattern. Kidney cancer is such a rogue, isn't it? Stealthily making its way around Rage

I wasn't sure about joining the pancreatic cancer forum because it's RCC in origin but I'll have a look.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply,  Carla

  • hi I had kidney cancer 11 years ago and had left kidney removed, Eight years latter i had  kidney cancer in the thyroid which was removed. Now 3 years on I have a 12mm kidney cancer tumour in the neck of my pacreas. All very scarey ,the operation has been offered to remove tumour but all the explanations of the operation scare me to death .This si where I am at the moment .No other treatment offered as yet. Im fit and well and have no sympphtoms

  • I had a full right nephrectomy in 2002, then nodules found on my right lung in 2012, so I had a thoracotomy. This was repeated in 2018. A growth on my left adrenal showed up on a scan at the end of that year, and I have been on oral therapy tablets since February 2019. On my last scan recently, it was shown it has grown, so the oncologist said to stop these tablets. After an appointment with the Urologist to fill me in on certain things and mentioning surgery, I've since had to have a 24-hour urine test, with another scan booked for early May, followed at the end of that month with an appointment to see the endocrinologist. The Urologist said to wait and see how things are afterwards, to see if all is okay for surgery. The waiting on everything now is far from pleasant. It doesn't help being a single parent to 3 with no other family. I've bounced back every time, a matter of keep going and trying to feel fairly upbeat.

  • Hello Vincent,

I'm sorry to hear your news and that you are worried (hardly surprising). Be kind to yourself, it's a lot to deal with.

Dave has been exactly the same - symptomless - throughout. Surgery has been his only option each time. This time (left adrenal gland) they suggested immunotherapy with a 10-20% success rate after  withdrawing their offer of a weaker radiotherapy in case it damaged the adjoining left kidney (his right kidney was removed back in 2013). the immunotherapist said if it was her, she'd have surgery so that helped the decision! we like a straight talking consultant.

Dave had a distal pancreatectomy last summer, the tail rather than the neck as you mention. His spleen was removed at the same time because the blood supply to the spleen comes through the tail of the pancreas so you will hopefully avoid that.

From what we have been told throughout, kidney cancer does not respond to chemo. It's a bee.

might you be able to have keyhole surgery, which has a quicker healing and recovery time?

I wish you all the best. You are not alone.

  • I love your attitude, Dave is a 'bounce back' character too. He's been so motivated throughout to get as fit as possible for surgery.

Dave's surgery on March 25th was cancelled as the surgeon had covid....there aren't words. He's the only surgeon willing and able to do it.  Rescheduled for 26th April (yes you read that right) and that's with emailing/writing/phoning everybody I could think of and nagging them every day.... still Dave keeps calm and steady. He says there's no point worrying because it just takes energy away from him.

The left adrenal tumour Dave has, 'only' grew to 11mm in January after they noticed it last August when it was 8mm. I hope yours is slow growing too.

The waiting is hellish as you say. I feel for you.
