I am going to hospital on 15th November for my partiel nephrectomy on left side. I have to be at hospital for 7am as I'm 1st operation off the day. I'm worried about how I'll feel once I wake up pain etc. Also your not allowed visitors now due to the uprise in covid cases so I think I'll find that quite harsh. How long will I have to stay in hospital as I don't want to be in for longer than I need. I was told I will have to have injections done daily for upto 26 days after to stop blood clots. I'm really not looking forwards to the operation but obviously have to have it. How long will it take before I can start doing little things at home without being in pain.
Dear Zante, l wish l had your option. I am on chemo as my kidney cancer was non operable but chemo treatable. Nevertheless, l am now on chemo and doing pretty well. I guess you will have many emotions, not least the uncertainty followed by the elation of getting on the treatment road. Your post-operative pain will be managed and your comfort will help your post-op recovery, so that will be a priority. Embrace what your oncolgy team is doing for you. As to the injections, l am having to do it myself , twice a day for 6 months, three more to go. It sounds ghastly but in reality is without pain. . You just pinch a fold of stomuch skin and inject the tiny tiny needle. Massage the area for a couple of secs and that's it. I initially got a bit of painless site-bruising but really it is easy-peasy. You may get a few minor site lumps under the skin but that's all. I wish you well and a spesdy and full recovery.. l have no expert knowledge just 76 yrs of living. . Regards to you. Suffolkflyer
Suffolkflyer thanks for your reply. I am glad to hear that you're treatment is going well. Thanks for the advice it all helps regards Zante1
Hi Zanta1,
I was the first down when I had my left kidney removed, I can only go by myself after op I went to ICU for 3 days were I had infusion of paracetamol, I did not have any pain as they do look after you, I went in Monday morning first down than on Wednesday went to another ward and by Friday I was home, I did find the injections more trouble but I am sure you will be able to have a nurse come to do them for you, if you cannot do it yourself, the pain doctors that I saw advised paracetamol four times a day for the first week, I believe I was very lucky I did not suffer with any pain, the only difference for me was my operation was for removal of the whole kidney so probably different from you, I will say try not to worry but, I know you will but they will take great care of you hope everything passes quickly and painlessly, I will pray for you xx
Sending you best wishes for your op on the 15th. I had a laparoscopic nephrectomy about a year ago. I remember feeling pretty groggy when I woke up after but in less pain than I expected, having had a hysterectomy years ago. They got me up and walking as soon as possible. I was in hospital for three days. I recommend soft, loose fitting clothes for when you leave hospital and easy to slip on shoes. They sent me home with painkillers but I didn’t need most of them. I did, however, need a dose of the laxative a couple of times! I hope your operation goes well and that your recovery is as smooth as mine was.
Thank you for your kind words and advice on what to take to hospital. I am glad your recovery went well
