Well, the operation took place on the 26th of August. Kidney, adrenal gland, lymph nodes and renal vein containing thrombus removed. There were complications which I didn't fully understand when the consultant told me that there was some sort of gunk on my bowel and liver which had to be removed also. I had a transfusion of 1 litre of blood during the op and a further 2 litres whilst in ICU. After two days in ICU I was transferred to the hdu for the rest of my stay.
I was kept on the epidural for pain relief during the first 6 days. During this time I experienced weird and vivid dreams. I don't know if anyone else has experienced the same. I had no strength and was unable to get out of bed. After the epidural was removed I gradually improved, the brain fog cleared and I was able to walk short distances with assistance From this time, apart from an episode of heavy vomiting I got better rapidly. By day 10 I was finally given the ok to be discharged the following day. So I know it is a long road ahead but at least I am home. Getting out of bed is something akin to scaling the north face of the Eiger and I don't have much appetite but these things will improve. I have started injecting my stomach with the anti clotting med and this will continue for 28 days.
I see the oncologist at the end of the month and will restart pembrolizumab.
Apparently there are collective nouns for surgeons including a carvery, a slice and a pride. Not official but provided by the medical fraternity. Everyone at the hospital was great, I have no complaints on that score.
