Surgery coming up

I posted a while ago that my oncologist had referred me to the urology consultant as he thought I was now ready for surgery following on from 14 months of immunotherapy.

Well I saw the consultant on Monday the 29th of June and he agrees. It will be a radical nephrectomy so open surgery.

I am aware that all surgery carries risks but I came away from the appointment feeling that most of the conversation revolved around possible risk. Now that may be me just having selective memory but I still find myself wondering if he did overstate it and if so why ?  He did say it would be a complex operation as I also have a thrombus on the renal vein which will be removed at the same time. My spleen may also be up for grabs

The hospital where the operation will take place does have a specialist state of the art urological department.

I just would like to hear the experiences of any one else on here who has also had a radical nephrectomy especially if there were further issues that had to be taken into account.

Thank you

Vicki
