Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Nephroureterectomu

Hello, and welcome to the forum. I had a nephrectomy in  2020.

Immediately post op I recommend soft, loose clothing and slip in shoes so you can avoid having to bend over. Mine was laproscopic so several smaller scars rather than one big one. They have healed well. It wasn’t as painful as I expected, having had a hysterectomy many years ago with one big vertical wound, but we all have different pain tolerances and experiences.

They sent me out of the hospital the next day with pain killers and laxative plus instructions about when to remove the dressings. I was lucky in that everything went smoothly. They like to get you up and walking about the ward and I knew I would have to work at my recovery so I walked a little farther each day at home, never over doing it. 

I felt very tired after my operation. I didn’t have any other treatment but I know that others have had immunotherapy. For me, it was just regular CT scans.

i also agree loose clothing and slip on shoes are a big help, and if you are female a front fastening bra.

Good luck with your surgery and outcome. I have been lucky as my surgery was the end of February and I’m now back in work and doing my pre op activities

Hi Garviv, we have spoken before ( a while ago now) on the bladder cancer forum, I never knew where to go as my cancer (UTUC) is classed as bladder cancer but was in my kidney and surrounding area. Anyway just wanted to wish you luck with your Kidney removal, I had a nephroureterectomy robotically in 2023 after neoaduvant chemo and recovered really well with no issues, I am still having regular CT scans and cystoscopies to check for any reoccurrence and metastases and to date I remain cancer free
