Nephrostomy Bag Help!

Hi Everyone,

My Father suffered acute kidney failure around 7 months ago due to his prostate cancer which resulted in him having a bilateral Nephrostomy.

Due to infections he has had to have the Nephrostomy bags that sit over the wound on the back. He did attempt the method whereby the pipes come out of the back into day bags on a belt but despite there being pipe guards on the back he repeatedly had trauma on the wounds that caused infections.

Whilst the back-fitted bags have helped with the infections, my Father is suffering from regular leaks from the bags as they keep peeling off his back, especially from the bottom end of the bags.

We have tried heating the bags adhesive (and the same goes for the additional hydrocolloid “half moons” we also add but still the leakages persist.

Any tips on how to prevent this as it’s really getting him down? I am hoping there is some form of “hack” that people use.

I have seen some people recommend "Convex" adhesive bags.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

I have found this information from Macmillan about having a nephrostomy which might help. Also his CNS should be able to help if he contacts them. If they don't know the answer they should be able to refer him to someone at the hospital who does.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your father's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
