Taking cabozantinib and liver can't cope

Hi, I’ve been taking cabo for 6 months. Firsts 3 months was 60mg daily which reduced my tumours by 50% but had to reduce to 20mg for the last 3 months as my liver couldn’t cope and would have been damaged.
My latest scan show no reduction but no growth so going to try 40mg daily.
Any advice for supporting the liver?
Thanks.

  • Hi  , interesting story and not sure my experience is relevant.  It's good to hear that you've had a big reduction in tumour size with cabozantinib.  I was started on 40mg.  I also saw a good reduction and was doing ok, a few side effects that were fairly easily remedied but a couple of successive scans showed a slight growth again.  So we increased my dosage to 60mg.  My diarrhea got worse and this in turn affected my kidney and liver function.  I've been working on controlling the diarrhea.  I find reducing my alcohol intake has helped, not that I drank much anyway, but the glass of wine with dinner has had to go.  I've also reduced dairy and that seems to help, as does fewer spices.

My dose has been reduced to 50mg (40 and 60 on alternate days).  Whether it is the reduced dose or the changes made to control diarrhea, I really don't know, but my liver, and kidney, function has improved again.

As I say, I have no idea if this is relevant to you.  What I do know, is that we're both on cabozantinib, with similar results and I wish you lots of love and best of luck with the ongoing treatment.

  • Thanks, it’s good to hear your liver function has improved. I’ll have bloods every two weeks to see if my liver copes. Start the new dose Monday but will try cutting out dairy. Good luck with your treatment hope everything stays stable.
