Anyone Declined nephrectomy?

An MRI just showed my Urologist what he says is cancer in my left kidney. He says  there's no option but removal or else it will spread. Although he's going to do a biopsy to be sure, I'm starting to think of declining the surgery. Age 81, good health and good life. I'm wondering how much benefit that would be to go through all that just to try to buy a few more years, Cancer could return or there's so many other things that could happen that I'm thinking of riding it out and just let my number come up when it's time.

If anyone has declined the surgery I'd like to hear from you.

  • Hi I had my right kidney removed in 2016 and was cancer free till 2021 then developed small nodules in my lungs. They were surgically removed and only now have returned. . I am now getting targeted therapy which is Pazobanib pills. This so far has been very successful with my tumour reducing from 4 centimetres to 0.8 centimetres. I think you should go ahead with your surgery and trust in the treatment. It is a scary operation but it may give you a cancer free life for a considerable time.

  • I'm 2 weeks post, radical nephrectomy. My right kidney when they removed it was 13cm x 8 cm. My CT Scan showed that cancer, had not spread anywhere else. It was a no brainer, the human body can live with one kidney, if fact my Uncle was asked in later life, when did you have your kidney removed, which his answer was " what " , "I only have one kidney". He was born with only one. The operation was straight forward and I'm hoping for a cancer free life now I have had it removed. It is purely your decision, but you can live a perfectly normal life with one. Good luck, with what ever you decide.

    • Hi Kernal.
      so your 81 years young.
I had a radical nephrectomy of my right kidney and am still hear to tell the tale nearly 15 years later.
The surgery like any other major surgery comes with a certain amount of pain and rehab. But I found this to be much easier than the caesarean I had had a few years before. 3 months post surgery I was globe trotting again on a Nile cruise and many subsequent world travels over the following years. I’m pretty sure that none of this would have been possible had I not had the surgery. I remained cancer free for 5 years when I did develop mets on my lungs but even then in the main have managed to live a pretty good active life.
There is only one right decision as to whether you have the surgery or not and that’s YOUR decision. But if you’re cancer free other than the tumour on your kidney I know what I think you should do based on my own experience.
Good luck with what ever you decide to do and good health.

  • Why on earth I should say I’d had a caesarean I do not know. I had a hysterectomy.

  • You should be so lucky, the young member of staff at my GP surgery, added to my NHS online notes, that I had had a Radical Hysterectomy. At least yours, are female conditions. I have changed to a female overnight. What sex am I going to put on my next official document  have to sign.

    Got laugh haven't you

  • Hi Kernal.
Hope you’re keeping well. It’s been 3 weeks since you’re posting the question about whether to go for surgery or not. Just wondering whether you have come to a decision.

  • Still on track for it. The urologist is going to do an endoscopy at the end of the month to be absolutely sure it is cancerous I guess.

  • I know a lady who had a nephrectomy at 80 and is now 91, no metastisis occured. She is enjoyng life to the full with a young dog, regular walks and excercise classes. Good luck whatever you decide.
