Hi, I have a robotic assisted partial nephrectomy scheduled for next week . The hospital is a 2.5 hour car journey from my home . Once I’m discharged I was wondering about how soon I could return home . We can stop at regular intervals to reduce chances of DVT and will be staying on discharge with a relative who lives fairly close to the hospital at least overnight . For obvious reasons I am keen to be back in my own home . Any advice welcome . Rennie

  • Hi Rennie, glad you have got your date sorted. The best advice I was given was to take a cushion to put between me and the seatbelt. Also a good idea to try to choose a route with no speed bumps. I was about an hour from the hospital so we didn’t stop at all. It was lovely to be back in my own home House.

Hope that it all goes well.

    Big hugs Jules xxx

  • The standard discharge barring special circs is about three days. Please do not assume a robotic partial nephrectomy will always end up as one. Sometimes surgeons need to switch mid op, to open surgery, but even so with modern techniques recovery is speedy.

  • Thanks Jules I’ll do that .

  • i second this about the pillow or cushion between you and the seatbelt

  • Hi Rennie,

I had my surgery last Thursday and came home yesterday evening. I had hoped to come home on day two but am on antibiotics for post op infection & so stayed in 6 days.

I used a rolled up coat (puffer jacket) instead of a cushion, but essentially works the same.

You'll still have your TEDS on which reduces the chance of DVT.

Remind the driver to take corners and roundabouts extra slowly as you automatically tense (I found). Avoid or very slow on speed bumps.

    Good luck
