Hi all,

As promised here i am posting after having had my right kidney removed. I am now a nephrectomite......lol. 10 days ago i had my operation.

Wow. I wouldn't want another one. But it's gone well and i'm recovering pretty good. I spent a total of 5 nights in hospital as there was a problem with my blood levels. The hospital time felt like weeks. The op had made me emotional. I was quite surprised by that. Whilst i didn't openly be emotional it was right there. Nephrectomy is a big deal even for someone who thinks they can handle things fine.

I couldn't wait to be allowed home and reunited with my wife. I felt sore on scar sites and inside but nothing unbearable. The nights in hopsital were long and pretty uncomfortable.

I was emotionally hanging on by the time it was agreed to discharge me. Been home 5 days now and feeling a little better each day. Still restricted in my movement all to be expected really.

I must wait 6 weeks i think they said until they know what cancer my tumour was.

So for now it's slowly does it as i don't think recovery of this is something you can rush.

Thanks everyone........Del

  • Great post, Mr Nephrectomite.  You make some pertinent points.  Wishing your recovery continues on the same trajectory and I commend your positivity which shines through this post.

  • Lol....Thanks mmum.

  • Hi Del get well soon, I am so pleased that you have home. I totally understand & I too had a rocket of emotions & also my wife ( the walk from the car to the Hospital Ward was horrible as she wasn't allowed in)

I think I may pinch your Nephrectomite term (that will confuse people even more) & however you look at it welcome to the club did you have keyhole surgery?

Your right about the Hospital and scarelly enough I had similar experiences.

The most important thing now is rest and remember not to overdo things, have a nanna nap or two don't fight it.

As I posted last week it will always be there but try to remain positive it's a big help ( I have done some relaxation sessions & also my Hospital has a Holistic health and wellness centre and offers different treatments)

I am sure you will be back on your feet pretty soon.

Take it easy & stay safe.

    Mike

  • Thanks Mike. Thanks for reply.

You can pinch hephrectomite or course. I ratherr enjoy the fact that i'm a radical nephrectomite. Sounds much better than it is. But to be 61 and radical anything says something about me that i rather like....lol.

I did have keyhole surgery. A robot was involved too appaently. I feel like i have a permanent stitch in my side.

Right now it doesn't feel like i will ever walk upright again. I have developed this uncool stoop that makes walking easier and reduces pulling on my scars. I set off every morning with my wife to walk our cockapoo puppy (9months) and i get about 200 yards then come back. I have no need to push it.

Don't mean to be super personal Mike but.... did your testes hurt after op ? if so are they ok now ?

    Thanks....Del

  • Hi Deloo please don't make me laugh Joy I was in a similar situation with my wife walking the dogs I was sweating & huffing and puffing after 150 yards it took me 15mins and my wife had walked 2 miles the dogs thought I had done a runner.

As I had in essence 2 surgeries I had keyhole scars and a open scar with approximately 60 staples ( the district nurse stopped counting after 2 and exclaimed wow looks like you had a fight with a nail gun (

No they were fine the only issue I had was toilet issues drinking Movicol isn't my idea of a fun drink and I was worried about straining my insides ( great topic but true )

Like I said you will have days when you are feeling better and then the next day totally wiped out.

If the pain is concerning maybe mention it. As you said it's not a time to be shy.

Get some rest keep us posted it will help everyone else and me cheered me up no end Wink

    Thanks Mike

  • Ah yes. I remember you saying in a previous post that you had keyhole to start then they reverted to full open surgery. Wowsa !!! 60 staples.!!

Lastly Mike at the very top of my breath. Like..when i try and take a full lung full of air i get a stabbing pain in my ribs  that makes this impossible. I'm managing fine on slightly shallower breathes but i just wondered if you had anything like this early on ?

    Thanks ....Del

  • Hi Deloo no I didn't but they advised me that they have to move everything else around to get the kidney out so your insides have been through a washing machine cycle, how are you sleeping on just one side or back because that took me a good while to get comfortable then wake up and move then start again.

Is it easier breathing on your back or is it the same if you are standing up or sitting down.

Hope this helps & keep taking the drugs.

    Mike

  • I'm taking paracetamol every 4 hours. Waiting for that 4th hour to come around gets a bit painful/uncomfortable.

The sleeping is going well considering. Sounds like i'm having the same time you had. Which side i sleep can vary in comfort level each time i try. The awful thing is trying to get comfortable can take me 5 minutes to shift into position just to sometimes find that new position isn't comfortable at all and then have to move cushions and pillows and get it all just right or close to just right. I sound a bit niggled about this but i'm really not. It's just a little wearing getting comfortable sometimes. Breathing discomfort is the same standing sitting kneeling. I think i may have a bruised rib or something it feels exactly like that. It's not getting any worse nor better. And Rib injuries take a long time to heal.

If it seems like i'm moaning i'm not really. I do appreciate your feedback Mike.

    Del.

  • Hi I am just glad that it's a small help to hear someone else has the similar issues. The things I most definitely looked forward to was a long hot soak in the bath. That unfortunately took longer than expected but it was worth it.

It not moaning firstly you need a release with out saying to your wife ( she knows ) as probably like mine is going through it with you and also people do forget she has to live with this b*"**r as Winkll so maybe get others in your support network to ask about her Wink

I know 4 hours seem like an eternity but each week it will improve it also gives you a goal mine was 12 weeks and I made sure that I was almost there on week 12 Cartwheel

    Just remember Nanna naps rulele

  • Hello Del and Mike……..I almost feel as if I am interrupting a bromance here Heart️ x I also have never been known as a radical anything and so will too take that title with pride i BlushThanks for pointing that out.

So mine was Thursday I had a spinal as well as a general , which was great to wake up to. Came home on Saturday and generally doing okay apart from the trapped gas which seems to accumulate in my shoulder tip and at times really bad nausea.

I can already stand up straight but haven’t been dog walking………… ( mainly as I haven’t got a dog Dog)!!! BlushHeart

Love to everyone on the site xxxx
