Hello everyone. I was recently diagnosed with classical HL stage 3 in May and have now started chemotherapy currently on my second cycle. When i was diagnosed i was told it was easily treatable and they were looking to put me into remission, i was also told that it is curable. As i was told this i have not really thought too much into the future only that 6 months down the line i would probably be ok.
I am 52 and am now thinking will/could i live another 20 years or more, is cancer really curable? Should i continue to work full time until i retire?.
Has anybody else thought like this? It has certainly dawned on me in the last couple of days that i may not reach an old age
Hello Bevstar - Pete here with Stage 4 HL and being treated since September 2019. I am 78. There is tons of information on the Lymphoma Action website so, if you haven't already, have a look. The website talks about treatments/cure etc. Also the organisation is very contactable and, for example, run support meetings using Zoom.
Where you are being treated there should be Nurse Specialists who have years of experience supporting dozens of people like wot you and I are. They act as liaison between patient/family/carers and the medics- when in doubt- give them a shout. They are on your side.
The treatment can be - NOT always - debilitating which might make it difficult to go to work. The Nurse Specialists can help you make such decisions regarding work or no work. Also may be able to advise you on how to approach your employer if modifications to your work practice might be of benefit to you (and your employer if they value you). Trades unions can support this with legal advice if required.
Finally don't forget hugs and larfs
Best of luck
Pete + long-distance hug
Hi Bevstar and a second warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am always sorry to see folks joining us. I am Mike and I help out around our various Lymphoma groups.
I don’t have Hodgkin's Lymphoma (HL) but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare, (incurable) but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 so although my Lymphoma ‘type’ is different I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.
The initial aim of the treatments used for HL is to cure but at least put you into long term remission.
I not only volunteer on here but also with Lymphoma Action that Tenterden has already highlighted.
Over my many many years volunteering I have talked with lots of folks who were diagnosed with HL at various ages……. ranging from being newly diagnosed to being many years out from treatment…… just last week I was talking with someone who was diagnosed with HL in their mid 30s and is now 65, had family, retired and living a great life.
Lymphoma Action is the only UK Lymphoma Specific Charity who have lots of good reliable information, videos etc….. basically all things Lymphoma.
They run regular Support Platforms both for patients with a few groups specifically for Family and Carers...... I highly recommend these groups as there is nothing better than talking with other who have walked the journey.
They also have a great Lymphoma Action Buddy Service where people can be linked up with someone who has walked the same treatment journey. They also have a Lymphoma helpline on 0808 808 5555 where Sharon or Nic will be on hand to give you some support - open every week day from 10 till 3.
We are always around to help out and chat ((hugs))
I was diagnosed stage 4b in Oct 2020 after a clinical trial and 6 cycles of ABVD I was complete metabolic response by May 2021 thanks to the brilliant care at The Royal Marsden fantastic support fromy wife and some telling off from Mike. Had my 2 year check last May and still no evidence of disease. My consultant said my chance of relapse was now down to 2.5%. It’s not pleasant but it’s doable hang in there
Hi Mike, thank you for your lovely response, I will defo look on the Lymphoma Action website and the support platform/Buddy Service sounds good, thanks for the information
