Hello I’m sorry to post here as have no diagnosis it’s just that Lymphoma has been mentioned . My daughter is 16 and has raised lymph nodes which she will be having an ultrasound on Wednesday. Our GP has been really great. My daughters bloods are fine and she’s had a chest X-ray that is also clear. She’s lost a lot of weight since March as is currently 6 stones in weight. I guess my question is that will an ultrasound be able to tell if these lymph nodes are ok? Thank you
Hi bettyboop67 and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am always sorry to see folks joining us and sorry to read about your daughter being investigated and that Lymphoma has been mentioned. I am Mike and I help out around our various Lymphoma groups. I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Stage 4a so I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.
There are over 60 types and sub-types of Lymphoma and this means that a very defined Diagnosis Process has to be followed. An Ultrasound is not going to diagnose Lymphoma but it will be used to see if her raise Lymph nodes are unusual for a girl of 16 years old...... remembering that she is still maturing so this will be taken into account.
If they think there is a need to look further they would look to do a biopsy and scan. But I have talked with many people of all ages over the years who posted about the same thing and lots found out it was nothing to worry about.
I will be a worrying time for you but let's look for this to be nothing but important to remember that should she find herself on a Lymphoma it is on the whole very treatable with great results.
Alway around to chat or answer your questions ((hugs))
Thank you so much for your very thorough reply Mike it’s much appreciated. Will see what they say Wednesday and take it from there all we can do., The nodes are quite large but although I’m airing on the positive her poor dad isn’t . Like I said our GP has been really good couldn’t ask for better really. My daughter is trying to put weight on but it’s just not happening for her, I’m even giving her all the bad stuff to eat as I know she’s feeling self conscious about how thin she has got.
mom wondering Mike do you think it’s worth me asking our GP to do some different bloods to see if there is anything else going on?
thank you
betty
Hello Betty- what a worrying time for you all. The only three suggestions I can usefully make is ask all the questions you want to - what might seem not worth asking IS worth asking. Write all and any question you might have on a piece of paper so you won't walk out of the consultation and 5 minutes later think "should have asked . . . ".
Also if both parents can't be with your daughter at the consultation, with permission, put your smart phone on speaker mode so the third person can listen and ask questions.
Finally, the specialists are on your side- they want the best for your daughter - if needs be, use the specialist nurses (oftem MacMillan nurses)- they are your support and brilliant at liaising between families and medics.
Good luck and hugs to you all.

Thanks Pete for you reply. My heads telling me everything will be fine with these nodes but I think it’s natural to worry a little because right now it’s the unknown isn’t it. Can I ask at ultrasound if they seen something wrong would they do anything there and then or would it be another appointment? My daughter suffers bad anxiety and isn’t very verbal either with strangers as she is Aiutistic so just going to the hospital is a really big thing for her

Hi again Betty. I can understand how ‘dad’ is going down the negative route, I have two girls so I do understand.
As you say your GP has been great and the fact that they did the referral for the ultrasound was a very good first step. If the Ultrasound comes back ‘satisfactory’ then your GP will continue to work through the tests that they can do and this can include various other blood tests…… but if the Ultrasound flags ‘any’ concerns the system will kick in and investigate further.
If she is still felling ok and there are no significant changes try and be patient and let the system do it’s thing but if there are any changes do call your GP and get their advice ((hugs))
