Does anyone have reassuring stories of having an infection that didn't respond quickly to IV antibiotics? My boy has been on IV antibiotics for 36 hours and his temperature has just spiked again so they are doing another blood culture. Should I be worried it could be sepsis? His neutrophils were high yesterday at 14 but normal today at 3.8 so still there. His haemoglobin has also dipped below 90 for the first time.
It's such a relentless worry. Trying not to panic as he's in hospital but hard.
Hi again Worrymum sorry to hear this but unfortunately this happens a lot.
A reduced immune system and an infection are not good partners…… and moving an infection can take time and a lot of IV antibiotics.
Over my years I have been treated for Pneumonia 3 times and Neutropenic Sepsis 2 times and once both at the same time…..
I have also had infections that were never identified….. most times it took a good week of IV antibiotics to shift these.
He will get there….. the medics will keep a good eye on him ((hugs))
Thank you, Mike. You always make me feel a little better. It's so hard not to panic
I have to say that the journey is in someways harder for those looking on than for those in the bed….. patents are passengers.
You may find it helpful to talk with other caregivers….
Lymphoma Action run a number of zoom groups for caregivers every month…… a great chance to compare notes with others
