Interim PET Scan

I have Stage II-IIIA Hodgkin Lymphoma, Nodular Sclerosis. Diagnosed in Christmas 2017. The reason it's II-III is because I have some 1.5cm lymph nodes below my diaphragm which my haema-oncologist said to be 'debatable' whether they are cancerous. I have a 14cm mediastinal mass in my chest.

I was already a hypochondriac even before being diagnosed with cancer and my current condition is driving me insane. I just completed the first of 6 cycles of ABVD. Can anyone tell me the chances that my mid-ABVD PET Scan will show Complete Remission (CR)? My doctor told me he expects the mid-ABVD scan to show CR. I've read that having a positive interim PET scan makes it highly likely that the disease will relapse.

Just want to find out the statistics on this.

    Morning,

I'm afraid I can't help with official statistics & your own personal situation, but what I can say is that the anxiety you are feeling is very normal.

I had my interim pet scan a week ago today, results the following day. I was a nervous wreck about this scan & struggled to get out of bed the day before my scan & the day of the results.

Fortunately I had a complete response & went in Thursday for my 5th treatment, but this time without the B drug (so just AVD)

sorry if this doesn't help, & it doesn't answer your questions- but I wanted you to know that scanxiety is very natural, it's part of this awful journey that we are on, & you will get to the other side of results day, prepared & ready to keep fighting Hodgkins.

Take care & please keep us posted xx

  • Hi,

Again I can’t tell you what you seek, it’s the imponderable!

But if you’re in the UK a helpful source of information is the Lymphoma Association but even they won’t be able to answer what is, after all, an individual problem.

Every person is an individual and therefore every person will have differing experiences and therefore differing results.

However, given all that, Hodgkin’s is after all, highly responsive to treatment so your chances remain pretty good.

    Do continue to post

    Hugs xxx

    Hello.

I have stage 3 HL as well and it was mostly in my mediastinal area (bulky masses). I had my interim PET CT scan just before Xmas and the abvd was doing it's job .... the cancer had gone from my spleen and has reduced by more than half in my stomach and chest. I am not sure of the stats on getting còmplete remission on the first scan but my doctor told me I couldn't ask for a better result after 4 treatments. They didn't use the words remission but They did say I was having a full metabolic response and that the chemo was working and they would expect after I finish my treatment ( 6 more to go) that they would expect to see it all gone. But even if it hasn't and there remains a small lot in my chest that a little bit of radiotherapy would finish it off.

Stay positive..... HL is a sod but it is beatable !

    Darren

  • Hi Darren.

I was PET-Positive after 2 cycles of ABVD and have now been moved onto Escalated BEACOPP. My consultant told me the same, if it’s not working sufficiently after 2 cycles, it wouldn’t cure me and would relapse.

I’m now due my 2nd PET next week to see if the stronger chemo is working.

Sleepless nights and fingers crossed from here.

    Good luck

  • How has just AVD reacted on your body? In this very similar case, my doctor is suggesting ABVD to continue.... please help me know is there higher chances of relapses or issues with just AVD?

  • Hi  I see this is your first post so welcome. This post is over 5 years old and a few of the members have moved on from the site.

Could I suggest you put up your own post in the group to allow you to connect with the active group members.

  • Hi Mike,

Im still here in the background. Good to see you’re still having an input on the forum.

Rodger, as Mike suggested, it might be better to start your own post as it’s 5 years ago since I had ABVD. My limited knowledge is they drop the Bleomycin after 2 cycles if all is going well as it can damage the lungs long term. I didn’t respond so was moved to BEACOPP anyway but I’m sure if you start a thread then people with more knowledge with me will chip in.

On a positive note, I’m cancer free still today so good luck with your journey.

    Regards

    Mark

  • Hi Mark, good to hear from you and good to hear that you are doing well.
