Hi, anyone had an experience with exposure to chicken pox. My 23 year old is on day 14 of 3rd escalated beavopdac.  He’s usually out of the neutropenic stage at this point.  My other son has been back from uni for a week.  He had a few spots on his tummy that he thought was bites, but he now has more and I’m concerned it might be chicken pox.  They both had it when then were little.  It’s Sunday so I will take him to the go tomorrow.  The spots haven’t blistered but there are now quite a few. I’m anxious about my eldest and what this means for him? He’s not unwell at the moment.  He’s been taking acyclovir since he started chemo, so not sure if that helps?  There always seems to be something to worry about!!

  • Yes there are lots of challenges……. If you have had chickenpox before, you are generally safe and immune to catching them again. However…… there us often a however the virus can reactivate later in life, causing shingles.

Acyclovir should keep this at bay but why not call the chemo support line if you have a number for this in your health board……. or just call NHS 24 on 111

  • I had a similar concern when I was going through escBEACOPDac earlier this year and I specifically asked about chicken pox because of the kids. My Haematologist didn’t seem too concerned at all though - he mentioned that it would be an issue if having a stem cell transplant but that chicken pox should be fine on escBEACOPDac…I couldn’t tell you why though!

Obviously make sure you keep an eye on things though - as I’m sure you very much are!
