FAP Operations

Hello I’ve recently been diagnosed with FAP and been told they want to operate within a few months. Some of the procedures specifically a full colon removal is quite invasive, they said some females may find it harder to conceive or carry to full term. I’m 23 and nowhere near ready to have children they said I could have a stoma bag, have children and then have it reversed but they think I could develop polyps in my rectum which is currently happening as well. Just wondering if anyones gone through this or any good articles to read about the operation options I’m finding it hard to understand the operations that my consult talked about they all sound the same to me.

Any advice will be much appreciated!

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm not a member of this group but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be more easily spotted.

I've found this information for you from Macmillan about bowel surgery for FAP which might help you a little. Do you have a clinical nurse specialist (CNS), sometimes referred to as a keyworker, assigned to you? If so, you could ask them to explain the different surgical procedures to you again so that you can make an informed decision. If you don't have a CNS, then you could contact your consultant via their secretary to ask about the surgery.

    Wishing you all the best
