Healing after EBR

Hi all.

I'm 3 months from finishing my 33 sessions of radiotherapy for thyroid cancer.

Can anyone who had head and neck radiotherapy share a thought about healing of the inside of the neck please?

Basically I feel things happening inside of my neck (I had scans and nothing wrong inside at the moment so I assume healing) and would like to know if it does improve in time and what are the lasting effects of that healing process.

My neck feels tender and tight, I have tried some lymphoedema exercises but the morning after I was more swallen and in pain so had to pause that (tried 3 times and uncomfortable all 3 times after).

I don't want to leave it in case that tightness sensation stays with me forever (I hate it), but also I feel like pushing myself a bit too much is making me sick.

I have referral for lymphoedema clinic for end of Feb.

But I am scared that I'd I leave my neck without exercises it will forever feel tight and uncomfortable.

Please advise

All the best

Izzy.

  • Unfortunately neck and throat issues are part of the new normal for many...we took a lot of punishment in the area...it does improve over time...Lymphoedema improves with massage...pain is treatable with Difflam, Oramorph, Gelclair, co-codamol etc., neck fibrosis is common, I have it...I just live with it...not a major issue.

3+ years since I finished and I still get the odd niggle...I was at my dentist for a filling 2 weeks ago...he noticed that I had some inflammation where one of my molars had been removed prior to CRT...a dental bone spicule had surfaced causing gum inflammation...and a sore tongue... it was rubbing on my tongue...now sorted...and being monitored.
