Jut returned from a 7 day cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. I live in Australia and the departure was from Sydney. I was a little apprehensive as I am only able to eat puree after 3 ops for jaw cancer over several years as well as 2 lots of radiotherapy. Normally eating while on holiday does not bear a second thought however more of a challenge for me. Thought I would go out of my comfort zone as I normally holiday where I can self cater so there is no issue with managing food. I did pack some food essentials as back up just in case. Couldn't ask for better service as I put in a special request to have my meals pureed. Breakfast and dinner were fine but at lunch I had to forage my own as there was only a buffet available. This was a bit of a challenge but I managed to find something that worked most lunches. I did lose 1k.g. while away but it was worth it. A wonderful holiday with 3 shore excursions. Had to take my own food on these excursions as nothing suitable to eat onshore. The locals cooked amazing food really close to nature. Barbecued lobster or fish accompanied with sweet potato, rice, taro all served on a plaited banana leaf. Great if you could eat normally. Glad I tried out a different holiday but I think that I will continue to go on holidays where I can self cater as it is a bit nerve wracking putting yourself in the hands of others and not sure what to expect.
I am managing the long term effects of jaw cancer but still living a great life albeit with a few challenges. Problem solving gets a good workout on a regular basis.
To all the future holidays that are still within reach.
