Hi guys remember me?

been quiet for a while due to bereavement and other life issues

anyway, here goes; I had a salvage neck dissection September 2025 and have had lots of swelling, fluid and soreness since.

ENT specialist is sending me for yet another MRI

SCANXIETY

I am also getting sporadic building episodes of a hot pins and needles/electric shock kind of pain at the scar site

still struggling to eat and no energy

any advice please ?

John

  • Hi John, I didn't have a neck dissection so I can't speak from experience, however, what you are feeling could be nerve damage which is taking a while to heal. It's good that the ENT specialist is being thorough and checking it out with the MRI, hopefully the result will put your mind at rest.

    Fingers crossed

  • Hi John.  I have had 2 neck dissections one of which removed most of the lymph nodes on one side - probably similar to your salvage dissections.  I think technically the salvage dissection is done after RT in which case the extent of the side effects are probably more severe than before RT due to the damage from the RT.  My dissections were a number of years prior to RT.

The fluid could be lymphoedema in which case some massage of the neck will help.  See my profile for a video link recommended by my hospital.

I tend to agree with Ray about the nerve damage.  Over 6 years on from my dissection I get some side effects from the dissection but not to thee extent you describe.

As to the lack of energy that could be down to post treatment fatigue.  It does hang around for quite some time for some of us.  Eating will come and gradually improve.  I have to constantly experiment with what I can eat as what works one week does not necessarily work the next.

Hopefully the MRI will put your mind at ease that there is nothing seriously wrong.
