Hi all, since my neck dissection 2 years ago I wake up with a really stiff neck which radiates up my head leaving me with an earache and headache. I just wondered if anyone else suffers this pain, especially first thing in the morning? Sue

  • Hello Sue, my neck and ear always feel weird and neck quite tight, but no real pain, but I didn’t have RT.  I do my neck exercise every single day and massage with Bio oil before going to bed nightly. Sometimes get a spasm of cramp like twinge if held neck in a certain way. I always ensure my neck is supported with my pillow when in bed so not taking any strain.  Not sure if this info is of any use to you but worth a try.

  • Thanks June, I must say that I have stopped massaging my neck so perhaps I should continue of a night as it seems better the more mobile I am. Also the RT hasn’t helped with the stiffness Disappointedx

  • Have you tried a neck support pillow. It helps my RT neck

  • Try a different brand. Some are really too hard

  • Hi Sue

I get similar - and have done since my second dissection 5 years ago although it is not really painful just annoying.  I think RT made it more pronounced.  I do find a specific support pillow makes a difference.  I use a Groove with a silk cover.  I also have a hot shower each morning before taking the dog out, which probably helps.  By mid morning the stiffness is normally a distant memory.

  • Thanks Peter, I can’t believe how long we suffer but it’s probably my fault in stopping massaging my neck each day

  • Maybe try to arrange a consultation with your local RIFS team (Radiotherapy Induced Fibrosis Support).... fibrosis can cause some chronic pain issues long after CRT finishes...
