I have had both done a couple of times.  The tonsillectomy is quite uncomfortable for 10 days or so and the neck dissection did not really trouble me.  I always like to have all the information available to me before I balance up the risk vs reward of treatment options.  From what you have said I think I would wait for the next scan to get a better understanding of what is going on.  It feels like they are not pressurising you to have the surgery by giving you the 2 options.  However, only you can make that decision.  Good luck.

That's what I'm thinking. Only trouble is my mouth doesn't open very wide anymore!

I suspect that under GA they will be able to open your mouth further than you can at this stage.  It may be a little uncomfortable post surgery.  I am sure they will have considered the options available to them before offering them to you.
