Two days ago I celebrated seven years clear with a beer closely followed by .............losing a tooth, despite my manic dental hygiene.
A TIP
If you have crowns on any teeth have your dentist X-ray them periodically. I lost a front tooth because it silently and painlessly, deprived of normal saliva cleaning, decayed behind the crown then just equally silently and painlessly broke off at the gum line.
I have moved so don't have the almost instant access to my hospital I used to enjoy but remedial action hopefully starts tomorrow. Why does everything happen on a Friday night????????
Oh dear am so sorry to hear about the tooth problem Dani. Hope you can get a quick referral to get it sorted out. I only have teeth left on the left side of my lower jaw but like you am meticulous about cleaning them. I use Biotene toothpaste for dry mouth, clean my teeth after every meal, floss, rinse with mouthwash of bicarb and salt. Have fluoride varnishes. Have not lost any yet but I also have gum recession and my teeth are all caving inwards so a bit of an issue. Nothing to do with my treatment but a long term issue.
Front teeth are the worst to lose in my opinion as it affects the way you look. Will they be able to put in an implant or will it have to be a denture?

My last hospital promised me implants for that side of mY top jaw which got 33Gy making it much safer. Unfortunately I have to start again with a new hospital. I shall push for an implant but failing that they surely will know an experienced private dentist. First the root needs to come out and I shall insist on a prophylactic course of PENTO

Hi Jackie
It's a drug combo of Pentoxyphilline and Vitamin E. Pento dilates blood vessels and Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant. They are used to treat ORN but increasingly prophylactically where there is a risk. My risk is small but still there. Dentist this morning and hopefully referral to hospital. My job will be to persuade bog standard NHS dentist to get GP to prescribe straightaway while I wait for an appointment.
How are things with you?
This disease has long reaching tentacles.......Just when you think you are safe, eh?

Oh Dani at least you are aware of this and have made us all aware of so many things . Can you not get it treated at your hospital if you explained the situation. Is it taken for long or short a short course of tablets. I get so interested in knowing all these things. So if we are getting any teeth out we need this? I'm doing well. Still do my exercises jaw and neck daily thanks to you and dry mouth but not as bad as early months. I wear mouth tape nightly and that helps along with the xylimelts. Our NI support group is going well. Looking forward to hearing how things go with you today at the dentist. I'm now 18 months post RT and nearly two years since my tongue operation. Seems like yesterday still . Good luck xxx
My old hospital is in Wales where NHS is devolved so there is the problem. People with ORN are on the regime for two years but as prophy the course is two weeks before extraction and six weeks after. I'll keep in touch. The escapade will be a lesson for all of us
Keep going and excellent news about the support group....hugs
PS. Get a map of the doses to different parts of your jaw. I have one but any dentist doing aggressive treatment should liaise with oncology anyway but it's useful having one yourself
