Hey all,

About 7 months ago i decided to get back into shape, i became very sedentary after treatment and ballooned to over 15st. I live on healthy food now (fatty fish, lots of veg, oats, nuts etc)

I am down to 12st 3lbs now and weight train 3 times a week and also run 20-30km a week, however i have had classic orthostatic hypotension symptoms for the last couple of months (dizziness when bending down and getting up, but NOT when running etc) and went to my GP. I was mostly concerned about the radiation to my neck being a factor.

He checked my neck (no bruits) and also ordered bloods, in the follow up he said my lipid profile is fantastic, and no further action, and gave me the clear to carry on training.

However i am still getting the dizziness when bending over and i am considering getting a carotid ultrasound, they are quite cheap at the end of the day

I have two concerns though, firstly given that my GP said my bloods are great and to just carry on with my life, am i being a hypochondriac getting a scan for peace of mind?

Secondly, those who have had private scans, how successful have you been in getting GPs to act on them?

Cheers

I was quoted £950 here in Shropshire plus consultant fee so I’m asking my GP to refer me to NHS and to the local Nuffield. I do unfortunately have bruit in both mine after checking a few weeks back ( yet to see GO about it though)

As far as I’m aware stenotic carotids are considered symptom free till you have a tia and I’m not sure that damaged baroreceptors show up on any sort of scan.

  • Hi Dani,

Thanks for the response, that does sound high!, i was quoted £345 for a carotid scan with a vascular radiologist at midland health ltd, i checked and they are registered so seem legit despite low price..

My resting BP is down to 101/61 (was 130/75 before i starting losing weight)- so it could just be the weight loss is responsible for making me vulnerable to any slight BP drop when standing- i think i will just get the private scan done anyway for peace of mind.

I really hope you get the referral and action plan you want! and thanks as always for the reasoned response :)

Do make sure it’s a Doppler not just an ultrasound
