Yesterday the changes in saliva began and he seems to be producing large amounts of sticky goo. The only way he can deal with this is to cough it up and spit it out. He has to do this every few minutes, and of course, this wakes him up. How have you all coped with this?
Hi. I managed at night by doing this in my sleep almost. I spat into kitchen roll, dropped on the floor then collected in a paper bag to be burned in the Rayburn. The sticky stuff hung about for a month or two. Having a humidifier in the bedroom might help. I tried steaming over hot water a few times in the day but I'm not convinced it made much difference. What did was being properly hydrated and that meant 3 litres of water in addition to the liquid food. Some people bought a nebuliser to use in the day. If none of this helps his hospital may try a drug called Carbocisteine which is a mucolytic used off label.

Thanks Dani, I’ve passed that on. The treatment keeps throwing new things to cope with!
Fortunately I did not really suffer from this during treatment. A nebuliser helped with the mucus I did get. My main problem was a dry mouth - that was greatly helped by having a humidifier beside the bed. The only problem was then I had to put the dehumidifier on in the morning to dry the room out!!
Mucus was transient for around 6 to 8 weeks.
Dry mouth is here to stay, but nowhere near as bad as in those few weeks after treatment. Now it's water during the day and biotine gel at night
