Need a little rant

Hello everyone.  Sorry, I need a little rant here.  However it may contain some useful information to anyone needing a pre radiotherapy dental assessment done outside of the hospital.

The last 2 entries in my blog give more details about last Wednesdays day in A&E and Thursdays day in MaxFac.  To cut a long story short, they still can't remove my two infected teeth and do my jawbone biopsy until Oct 7th. (Have to complete 28 days of tablets first).  Till they then can't say how bad my ORN is, and whether there is cancer involvement or not.

What is now really annoying me is that they told me in MaxFac that they were amazed that these two back teeth were not removed during my pre radiotherapy dental assessment.  I was able to tell them why.  Back in 2013 my radiotherapy had already been delayed once and all they were waiting for was for me to see the hospital dentist.  But there were no available appointments and my MDT were desperate to start my radiotherapy.  So I was sent with the paperwork to my local dentist for the assessment.  I remember reading the paperwork.  It said remove all teeth that may potentially cause a future problem and apply a flouride coating.

I only had the flouride coating, and I remember being so pleased at the time that I'd not needed any teeth out.

  • Rant away Margaret. It’s so stressful. I have heavily restored teeth due to childhood swigging of Franol syrup for asthma. I fully expected to have all my molars out but was pleasantly surprised to have none.
Two years out of treatment I had to have a wisdom tooth on the treatment side out. I can’t tell you how worried I was. The hospital took two seconds to take it out and sent me home with a week of antibiotics. Since then I have badgered and got a treatment map so that I know what dose every bit of my jaw got.
You’d think dentists and Maxfac would check with each other

  • Thanks Dani.  It's so nice to be able to connect with people who fully appreciate the situation.  I'm getting very weary of well meaning friends and neighbours who keep telling me I should have just let the dentist take my teeth out last month.  I'm also beginning to get irritated with my holistic healer, who thinks she can fix my problems better than MaxFac.  She has just emailed me a recipe to make up some revolting sounding paste to apply to my gums!  I keep telling her I'm not allowed anything but a salt water rinse but she won't listen.

Rant over, I'm going to go and get on with the housework.  Thanks again for being there.  Much appreciated.  xx

  • Sounds a good plan.  Perhaps I'll just leave my husband to do the housework and settle down on the sofa now.  Enjoy the match!
