My husband now has thrush and we are wondering if he should be doing different types of mouth rinses and if he should continue to use steam to help with his sticky saliva? He was using the biotene mouth rinse for his saliva issue and needs salt and baking soda rinse for thrush. We are waiting for his doctor to call in a prescription. He had a great day yesterday and now this. It is so frustrating!! This is week 6 post radiation.
I don't think it matters what mouthwash he uses as long as he keeps his mouth clean, especially after anything sweet. The yeast loves sugar. I was advised to use Corsodyl last thing before bed (it doesn't work if there is SLS in the mouth so has to be taken half an hour after brushing teeth) I did it religiously through treatment even though the first 30 second hit was awful. I managed to avoid thrush until I finished treatment and then only got it once. A week's course of Fluconazole sorted it

Has anyone had any luck with lemon juice/water mixture or apple cider vinegar? How about eating yogurt? Hubby has been on nystatin for 4 days. Just trying to get him some relief!!
Yoghurt is supposed to work for vaginal thrush but I must say the whole process sounds particularly unpleasant. Nystatin is generally not the drug of choice and lots of people report the same but some say it works for them
The trouble with RT is that because of the damage to the sensitive lining of the mouth and the lack of saliva the mouth microbiome is severely damaged. I suffered only once and was told by my dietician to keep my mouth scrupulously clean. So after getting on top of the pain with fluconazole I regularly used bicarbonate mouthwashes to keep my mouth alkaline (thrush loves sugar and acid pH) and scrubbed my tongue with a scraper
I think alkaline bicarb would work better than acid lemon
Maybe try Fluconazole to get on top of it rather than Nystatin?

Thanks for your response! He used the salt and baking soda rinse often, but then switched to a biotene rinse to help with dry mouth and mucus build up. On vacation he felt well and ate a wide variety of foods. Once we got home, he noticed the thrush and continued the salt/baking soda rinse. Doctor prescribed the nystatin and he has 5 more days on it. This whole thing is hard to manage!! If not cleared in 5 days we’ll ask the dr about the fluconazole.
Hi ouch ouch st the thought of lemon juice and vinegar 7 years after treatment never mind how shirt a time your hibbts been finished. I had 2 courses of flucozonole some report nyststin works it never touched mine.
