Hi I'm nine months post RT finished end June 2024 . Over past three weeks I have noticed my tongue feels like it's been burnt and more sensitive compared to before this. My diet is basically the same so can't put it down to trying new foods. Just very annoying as it seems to come and go but is mostly there. Is this normal . Thank you .

  • Is this normal .

Jackie…. Yes. It’s called burning tongue

It’s likely to wax and wane. If you keep a food diary of everything you might just find a trigger.

  • Thank you Dani. It's just so awful ATM. I tend to eat the same foods every day. Has just started three weeks ago and still here. Jackie xx

  • Keeping your mouth as moist as possible really helps. It’s a pain! I understand how you feel.

  • Thanks Dani, I know it's so annoying xx

  • I just posted something The same thing My radiation was June also! And now I have the same! Isn’t this awful?

  • It really is. As if we don't go through enough with this type of cancer. We think we are improving and it's one step forward and two back. I am constantly keeping my mouth moist, drinking water chewing gum using gels . My poor mouth never gets a break .

  • It could be candida/yeast infection on your tongue. It's very common after RT and usually caused by a dry mouth/lack of saliva which would normally keep it at bay. The obvious signs of this infection are white patches on your tongue, a feeling of soreness and discomfort when you eat, especially anything even mildly spicy or peppery.

My doctor prescribed Nystatin in liquid form. You swill it around your mouth for 30 secs, then either swallow it or spit it out about 4 times a day until the infection has gone. I use it preventatively now, once before bed and after breakfast. Does the trick for me. It might be worth looking into for your symptoms.

  • Hi if its burning tongue I kept a food diary my triggers were anythjng fermented cheese yoghurt was ok with Greek yoghurt, acidic and citric .My tongue when I looked in the mirror was Scarlett i had no traces of bacteria. Your tongue sounds very similar to mine

As others  have said it coukd be thrush that’s painful and for me only  Flucozonole cleared it up I did need 2 courses. My burn)ng tonguestarted around 18 months post treatment. with thrush I had white patches

    hope this helps
