My husband rang the bell today and we are home.  His major side effects are the awful mucus near his soft palate and everything tastes horrible.  He has been eating all kinds of food this whole time and has been maintaining his weight pretty well.  He is looking forward to the day when food tastes good again and eating is not so daunting.  We return for a check up with the radiology doctor April 16th and a pet scan will be scheduled in 4 months.  It was a very emotional day today as I was so happy to be heading home, but sad to not be with my kids and grandkids who have been my saving grace through all of this.  I think I have been holding in lots of feelings and emotions as a lot of it came out as we were leaving.  I am crossing my fingers that the next few weeks will be a time of healing, rest, and improvements.

  • Well done Mr Rara.
look after both of yourselves. Losing wrap around care can feel like falling off a cliff …..easy does it.

  • Well done on getting through this difficult period. Healing is the priority now, then hopefully things will start to return to (a new) normal. I'm now six months post treatment and my taste went sideways too - every day there are small improvements in taste. Some happened pretty quickly and some are only just getting there now. Bananas used to feel like eating candle wax, now they are OK. The thick mucus was a problem for me too but it improves, albeit slowly. It's good to hear that he's kept his weight on. Be prepared for a slow journey but most things will improve.
