Hi all, just looking for a bit of guidance really.  My situation at present, is that I can still eat (although everything burns my mouth and tongue) and can still swallow, but everything tastes like dirt.  I have this constant foul taste that taints everything, and I'm a real 'foodie', so that's not the issue.  Things smell nice and I think I can eat it, but when it comes down to it it all tastes Foul.  What did any of you do i you had this problem?  It;s getting me down a bit I have to admit, and I still have 4 more weeks o treatment yet.

Thank you all for all your advice and support, I really appreciate it.

Hugs, Hazel x

I abandoned eating entirely and  used my feeding tube. Honestly, what was the point if adding even more suffering? I pump fed at night, didn’t have to fight to eat in the day and found time to get out with the dog, talk to the bees, read and watch tele, much better than fighting with food.

  • Hi Hazel

I remember being in hospital with weight loss problems due to PEG feeding issues, food trolley came round and I badly wanted and needed most things on it, strangely had no taste or appetite so that was a no-no...relied on pump feeding until things improved, and improve they did ...takes time.

Did enjoy alcohol free Guinness then, still do, gets some extra calories in.

  • Thanks Dani, I think that's what's I might do, as it's such a struggle trying to find things that I like to eat, and then discover it all tastes like dirt!  One less thing to worry about then.

  • Thanks Peter!  I think I've only lost a pound or two so far.  I will get calories in when I can.

  • Thanks Loz.  Don't eel like it at all now, but was worried that I should really be making more of an effort.

Just to warn you that your team may cajole you into not giving in to the tube and that stopping g eating may cause your throat to forget how to swallow.
There are masses of folk here who give a lie to this. I did my swallow exercises and I’m fine.
Looking at my last scope it’s obvious that I have lost a lot of the muscle at the back of my tongue and my oncologist is pleasantly surprised that my swallow is unaffected.

  • Hi Hazel

I think it is fantastic that you can still eat but is it really worth forcing yourself and putting you through unnecessary pain? Maybe try to stick to the food you still enjoy and increase your fortisip or ensure to get the calories you need ? That way you will avoid also getting anxious before eating knowing that the food might taste like dirt and you may feel pain. YOur taste buds will come back but is takes time.

    Best wishes.

Thanks Dani, I will continue with the swallow exercises and do what I can eating wise.

    Thank you!

You are right Fab1, I don't want to become an anxious eater, I've always looked forward to my food. I didn't overindulge, but I did love what I ate.

I'm so happy to hear this.  Thanks you!
