Hi Everyone
I'm now 12 weeks post treatment. I have 'unreal' pain in my right ear when swallowing. I control it a bit with over the counter painkillers but it never really goes away.
ENT have told me that it is likely to be ulcers in my throat which are causing interference to nerves. Although there is too much mucus and secretions to see properly what is going on when they scope me.
If I could stop the pain then I'm sure I could start eating and not rely on overnight pump feeding through a PEG.
Anyone else experianced this? Im desparate to start eating again
Hi All
Im now 3 weeks post radiotherapy treatment and I think my recovery is going ok (ish). The one really frustrating problem is the fact I can't taste food. Or if I can, the taste isn't right, or it's too strong. My tongue on the tip feels as though it's numb, like it has a cover on it and I think this is connected to my taste issue.
Has anyone else experienced something similar?
I know 3 weeks isn't long in recovery but I get really hungry, Fortisips through a PEG just aren't the same as real food!!!!
Hi. It is great that you have an appertite back. After treatment our taste is often different to what we were used to. I can taste most things by the level of taste is very much muted compared to what I remember. Some things taste really strange, but most taste normalish.
You are still quite early on in recovery. My taste started to come back around 4 weeks and I was still using the pump at that stage to supplement the calories. It took quite a few months until the ulcers in my throat made eating reasonably comfortable again. Your clinical team are almost certainly right on the source of the pain. If you have had a tonsillectomy you will experience similar effects.
Keep on progressing. It is slow and there will be steps back. However you will get there in the end. Almost certainly it will not be as before, but a new normal. Still a good place to be with a good quality of life. See my post on surviving 5 (or 1) year in the last few days.
Hi Rich
Our mouths and throats took a real battering with the treatment required ....I finished treatment in June 2023 and it was August/Sept before I could really attempt solids, still had to use plenty of Difflam/benzocaine spray to numb my throat to aid eating, pain lingered for a few months then eased...17 months on and my taste/appetite are still improving...still get a few little niggles easily controlled by Difflam spray/pain meds.

Hi, I don’t know if it’s a similar side affect, but I suffered with lymphoedema when having rt, I had pain in ears like a knife was stabbing it inside and still occasionally get this pain. A course of steroids helped and regular neck massages too,. Hope it clears for you x
