Hi, just had a rather pleasant visit to the hospital dental hygienist, it seems my mouth is in rather good shape and if I keep doing what I'm doing I should be ok. So I was wondering whether I can get my list of goodies on prescription..

recommended products are

Gengigel.. normal and first aid mouthwash

Oralieve toothpaste

and the infamous Duraphat 5000

Does anyone know?

Cheers.

  • Duraphat is on prescription yes.

  • Duraphat definitely . I doubt you will be able to get the Oralieve toothpaste and in terms of mouthwash you would be able to get Difflam Mouthwash on prescription. However do ask your GP...you never know....

    Have a wonderful day.

  • it just seems odd that we have to pay for items that are recommended because of our treatment..

  • There are alternatives. BioXtra mouthwash can be got on prescription

When you start treatment you’ll get lots of mouth preps on prescription.
    Difflam, Gelclair, Caphosol, Chlorhexidine

Oralieve is ok but it has mint in it. I used Oranurse which has neither mint nor SLS. I couldn’t use Duraphat for a long time

  • Hi Duraphat yes I get that from dentist on prescription gp won’t prescribe that. Mouthwash g o prescribe s me bioxtra whuch is soft and gentle. Others I doubt ut. Sadly head and neck cancer patients have to pay  for quite a few things including  after care quite often not our fault. I’m lucky I have a great dentist snd I have 4 visits a year including fluoride varnishes. I pay a denplan though ti ensure I  get the above.

  • I get duraphat & bioxtra mouthwash on prescription

  • Wow you are so lucky in the U.K. to be able to get so much on prescription. In Australia I have to pay for everything that was recommended including Biotene toothpaste for dry mouth, Curasept mouthwash, Biotene dry mouth gel  etc in fact everything. It does add up quite a bit but it is worth it as the products really help.

  • Hello, Reading with interest. My practice said the mouthwash is not available on prescription and I can't see it on the NICE site at the moment. Is this something relatively new do you know? Thanks.
