Hi ,

Is there anybody here who has a PEG and needs to take Levothyroxine daily ? I've spoken to two GPs at my practice neither were helpful or interested to be honest. My PEG is being done in a week and I don't know if I'll have to order liquid Levothyroxine, crush it or manage to swallow it.If anyone would could advise me on this please.I'm hoping the someone may know on the ward when I'm in overnight but so far I'm getting no help from GPs,

Thanks Turi

  • Hi Turi. If you can get liquid levothroxine personally I would get it. I had my co codomol in a soluble tabket so we coujd put in via my tube. I managed to rally swallow my amolodopine tablet but if I couldn’t I would crush it and syringed it in I had n g tube fitted mud treatment the first couple of weeks I was ok on swallow. Then all of a sudden it became harder. So forewarned is forearmed.

  • It comes in liquid form. Just tell your GP that is what you need as you won’t be able to swallow tablets. You might as well start now.

    Thanks,

  • Hi. I had a PEG & put all meds through in liquid form. Just ask GP or hospital team for liquid versions. Flush PEG through with cool, boiled water then put meds through then flush with water again. You should be given all info from your HENs nurse. Have soluble/liquid paracetamol ready as you’ll need it for a few days after PEG op.

  • You can swallow it. You can take the liquid without having to wait before you eat which you have to do with the tablets.

  • Hi Turi oh yes cost played a factor at my g p I ended up getting my oncologist to write to them . My g p refused the ensure food supplements and wanted me to have something called amyes 500 mil for 125 calories Umm no I struggled to swallow 125 mil for 300 calories. No way was I having 500 mil !
See if hospital will prescribe my oncologist during treatment prescribed everything

That’s simple. Contact your CNS and ask them to get your oncologist to prescribe it, sending the prescription to your GP.

    sometimes I could scream

You should hear what some consultants say about some GPs. It’s hilarious!

Ive been lucky with my GP but my oncologist always said that if you can’t get something to contact his team.
