Hello all

I had my first follow up. and the nurse said it was normal to have flecks of blood in my mucus, particularly in the morning. I'm sure they are right, but it does seem alarming first thing. Any thoughts?

  • Hi Steve. She is right. Your throat will be red raw inside and it bleeds. Have you something to help it heal. I used both gelclair and caphosol diluted with water to swish round my mouth and gargle with. Keeping your mouth clean is a must too ... so that's regular brushing. I managed with a normal electric toothbrush but some people use a gentler brush from Curaprox. Last thing at night I used alcohol free Chlorhexedine which stung like billy O for a few seconds but killed any bacteria in my mouth

  • Hi Steve,

My husband is at the end of week 10.  He has found the two weeks following the end of RT very hard, but he did choose to come off all meds apart from paracetamol and ibuprofen, so……

But I think the mucous side of things is a different issue.  His mouth and throat was and still is red raw.    He is using Gelclair and Duraphat toothpaste but is using his electric toothbrush again now as the gums seem okay.  He has been steaming with a few drops of Olbas Oil for several weeks now, which eased the breathing through the mucous and he does think it has helped quite a bit with how it stubbornly stuck to the gullet.  He’s still got it, but it is getting better – less of it and looser, so easier to cough up. (Sorry, TMI!)  The blood has gone now but the lining of his throat was so fragile and raw, it wasn’t surprising.  I think the effort of coughing caused much of the blood.

He also swills and gargles with 1tsp salt and ½tspbicarb of soda to a cup of water.  Keeps nasties at bay, also helps with the healing.

  • Same here. 4 days post treatment and same symptoms as above. Same treatments too.

  • I suppose it's reassuring that symptoms are similar for all.
