Hello everyone  new to forum. I've had throat cancer now for 8 years 10 microlaryngoscopys   up until last October  I had a partial laryngectomy   . I've never been a smoker in fact the surgeon  has told me numerous  times he's never operated  on someone so fit as I.....loved running !! That's the problem I'm having breathing difficulties  it's like asthma  as I've had that since I've been 18 I'm 58 now . But it's definitely  not asthma  I struggle  to breath if I'm doing  anything  the least bit physical has anyone  else been like this . And does it get better

  • Hi Barney and welcome.
You need to see your GP. Don’t procrastinate.
My husband is fit. He’s a runner. He used to run fell races, none of this mamby pampby flat stuff. He got breathless on exercise and largely gave up.  He has been treated by our practice nurse for 3 years for asthma even in the presence of  an excellent lung function test. Despite my protestations that his diagnosis be reevaluated he did nothing. Just before Christmas he had a coronary. His cardiologist told him that his asthma is angina.
So. I’m not suggesting that is what’s wrong but it pays to have a professional opinion.

  • Thanks for the answer  yes I've seen the gp she gave me new inhalers but did agree with me about it not being asthma.   My surgeon  had told me he thought he left enough of an airway after surgery but that's been 4 months now and it's still the same  there is a size system for the Airways  I knew nothing about it till a nurse saw my airway alert card .and on that I'm now a size 5  before it was a 9 so I'll just need to soldier on

  • Hi Dani

It does pay to get breathlessness evaluated properly as you have mentioned it can be a sign of a heart issue. I guess it is because of reduced oxygen being circulated as the heart is not functioning properly. I have known a few people when I was working that needed a pacemaker as they were getting very breathless and this seemed to solve the problem.

I am so sorry to hear that your husband had a coronary. It is amazing when someone is so fit that this can happen. I guess our genetics can play a large part in things same as it seems to do with some cancers. I know that I led a reasonably healthy lifestyle, did a bit of exercise, ate healthily, did not smoke, did not drink but still got cancer. Life is a bit of a lottery.

I do hope that your husband is getting on O.K. now and back on his feet. It can take a while to get your confidence back after something like that.

    Sending hugs.

  • Thanks Lyn. He has physically recovered. There was no heart damage but he is on pills for life and mentally he's had a kick in the teeth. He won't share with me. God knows I've tried....He has to find his own way...

  • Hi Dani

Sounds like he needs time to adjust to his changed circumstances. A scare like that makes you look your mortality in the face and that can be a scary prospect. He'll get there, his resilience will win through.
