Hi everyone,
This has been a brilliant site – full of info and reassurances that, while this road is tough, it is not insurmountable. Reminder – Husband has HPV cancer, with unknown primary. First op was tonsillectomy (probable site), second was for PEG insertion.
The update for the end of week 4 is pretty good, 20/35 radiotherapy sessions done and 2/2 overnight chemo sessions done. There may be one further treatment of chemo at the end “just to mop up” due to the CUP. His weight went down by 4kg at the beginning, but that was probably due to cutting out beer, snacks and biscuits! He’s put a kg back on this last week.
So, Mr Aotearoa is still eating and has done one Fortisip trial-run through the PEG earlier this week, but today (Saturday) he is struggling a bit. He feels as if this throat is “closing in” and becoming more painful. He’s on Cocodamol, a mouthwash and something to take before meals to anaesthetise the throat area. Soup today was a smooth leek & cheddar cheese with half a “thin” followed by a full cream vanilla yogurt. He managed, but it was "very uncomfortable" (understatement!) Should he ask for oromorph….? Does that work differently?
He’s not one to read up on stuff – that seems to be my job. He will read if I put articles or threads as “good to look at” but he’s not inquisitive or investigative otherwise. That’s why I’m here.
So I just want to say thanks to all those who are contributors to this forum – your wisdom and advice is very much appreciated. I will post if I need help – no point in struggling alone. Again, thank you.
Aotearoa
Hi sounds like the time is getting close for pain medication. Just a reminder movicol or laxido needs ti be prescribed when opiates are needed well done on week 3 it’s about par for the course at this time. He can try the oramorph 30 minutes before trying to eat it can help. If not start to the the peg that’s why it’s there so please encourage him. I had n g tube fitted end of week 3 it was a lifesaver for me.
goid luck I too had 35 sessions of radiotherapy the last 5 we’re hard but if u can do it anyone can

Hi. I used my PEG from week 4 of treatment ( 6 weeks of chemoradiation. 30xradio & 6xchemo) as I could only sip water at that point I had all meds in liquid form via PEG plus water I was fed overnight by linking PEG up to a pump It took the stress & upset of trying to continue eating away It was a godsend
It took a while to get him to stay on top of the pain before he needs it, but he is doing that now. I have suggested that he mentions oromorph(sp?) to one of the daily team so it’s there when he feels he’s not keeping on top of things. He’s taking the cocodamol (up from 15mg to 30mg from today) and tying it in with the anti-sick and mouthwash 10mins or so before meals, which leaves him one dose before bed or during the night. He takes a Laxido for every cocodamol and trying to get the balance right. He knows he has the PEG but I feel it’s up to him when he wants to use it. I’m encouraging him to take something between meals, but he finds the Fortisip too sickly and prefers a plain yogurt or some rich cream dessert instead. Anything chocolatey is a no-no, although hot chocolate with full fat milk is fine.
The neck is starting to burn now and the deep purple colour is quite alarming! I have some of those cold/hot gel packs which I popped into the freezer for 15mins and they have offered relief after today’s session. Our youngest son is coming down from Manchester on Weds (after a Covid test), so hopefully that will be a distraction. Not that I’ve got Christmas meals sorted at all as I’ve no idea what to expect....
I have to say that I stopped climbing the walls with anxiety after I found this forum. Everyone who contributes has sound advice and for that I am very grateful.
Hi pleased we’ve taken some if the pressure off. As for Christmas just do what your would usually he will either pick at it or not. I’ve been known in my early days ti take an ensure or 2 out with me when we went out for food. I used to buy a coffee and smell it when we went out in daytime didn’t feel guilty as I had bought something so I sat and either let my n g tube feed me ir sip and ensure. Your hubby’s doing well let him dictate the pace as far as food goes.
yes ask for oramorph.

Hi Aotearoa now he is nearing the end of his treatment his neck will be affected from the RT, get him to let his team have a look at it, hopefully they will give him a prescription for Flamazine, it is really good. My neck was in a bad state, the Flamazine cleared it up in about a week.
Regards Ray.
