Just had my first radiotherapy didn't  realise how quick it was just getting comfortable with the mask breathing had settled down and the nurse was taking it off I know the hard times are to come

  • Hi Lallydo well done on starting your RT, the weeks will go quickly, then you will start your recovery. Keep your neck moisturised during the RT if you can, my wife used Aloe vera gel on my neck, apply after not before, each day.

    Regards Ray.

  • Tick that one off and well done. I'll second the Aloe Vera gel. I used to slap that on in the car on the way home. I hardly burned...just got a little red and crusty

  • Hi Lallydo, well done on starting your RT and stick with it as it will become difficult. I second the advice on skin care and would also encourage you to make sure you eat well now as it may become more of a challenge as treatment progresses. I lost over 12kg during my treatment, much of which I have  now recovered.

    All the best

    -John,

  • Do you have a feeding tube or plans for one should it be needed?

Relaxed I may have read that the wrong way, or maybe not Yum

  •  Not spoken to anyone about a feeding tube, will mention it on my first review

  • I would always advise anyone, who is offered a RIG or a PEG, to have one.

  • My trust didn’t place PEGs or RIGs as a matter of course but I was told that nasogastric tubes were offered when needed. I had one mid week four after I had abandoned anything by mouth over a weekend. It was a life saver. It let me concentrate on staying pain free and sane then later on trying different foods knowing I didn’t have to eat to stay alive.
Where are you being treated? Some trusts won’t offer them at all!
By chance I met somebody I had known years earlier and he had been at the Royal Marsden. I hardly recognised him! He had been refused a tube and had lost four stone and never regained it. It was quite shocking. It was then that I realised how lightly I’d got off. I am forever grateful to the sympathetic treatment I got from Swansea.
