Hi , I was discharged from hospital yesterday, chest infection. I managed to finish RT but not chemo. Discharge with antibiotics , not much advice. My radiograph sad I can use nebulizer to loose phlegm, so I did buy . Now , did you use it if yes how .it looks like I always ask for advice, but after these months I learnt that you guys give me the best advice x

  • Hi Basbas. I have been back home just over a week since leaving hospital after being there for four weeks after having my whole voice box removed. I use a nebuliser every morning to clear the phlegm and sometimes mucus. It works well  sometimes I use it during the day if I feel that I need to clear from my lungs etc, but I don't do this very often. Eventually I will only use it when I feel it's necessary. Keep using it until you feel you don't need it anymore. Tommo Lt.

  • Hi Tommy, what do you use ? Just water , cold , warm ?

    thank you very much

    Basia

  • Hi Barbara. I used nebuliser up to 6 times a day for 5 minutes at a time. Sometimes using saline solution sometimes plain boiled water. Always boil water if you’re not using saline. I would say I used mine religiously up to week  6 recovery then the mucus started to go so used it less.
glad you are home how are you ?

  • Hi Hazel Slight smile, not bad but really I have enough now.  Pain is not so bad, good pain relief plan but phlegm is killing me. Plus I can’t tolerate feed , only 600 ml , maybe antibiotics? Finish it this afternoon so I hope it will be better now.
I have a dreams about food and drinksJoy

Did you use warm or cold water ?

    thank you very much

    Basia

  • Hi Barbara I always used it cold would  boil it ti get rid of impurities then let it go cold. As for feeds I was similar I found it easier to feed stood up I  did 3 small feeds at a time as my tummy had shrunk.
Oh yes we all dreamt about food mine was a simple cheese sandwich  on home baked bread and a soda water.
i got there soda water came first cheese sandwich did happen but on crappy white bread first. Home baked bread did happen just took time.
you’ll get there we all do.
    hugs

  • Hi Basia

i never used one. I did try steaming my head over hot water with a towel over me which did help. I suspect, for me, taking tiny sips of water did more.
I used to feed at night with a pump and was told to aim for a litre at night and to top up another 500 ml in the day which is ridiculous! Like you I managed around four bottles. Just do what you can. There’s no point in having more than you cope with just to vomit it up!

I found nothing quenched my thirst for a long time. Diet cola and diet ginger ale did later.
I just had to do a lot of spitting.
Hang on in there, it gets better.

That’s what you need. If you are maintaining that then don’t force food down that you don’t need is what I told myself.
