Hi everyone pre op all done , biopsy set for a week today.
Have been up half the night coughing and bringing up awful green/yellow muck and feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest . Phoned the gp but you rarely get to see one anymore and I have a telephone consultation this morning. Hoping for a course of antibiotics (fingers crossed)
Now my Dilemma is do I hope the antibiotics work in time and not say anything to surgical team or should , I let them know straight away? I don't want to miss my appointment or have to reschedule it but I also don't want to take the appointment then they won't do the procedure and it could have been offered to someone else . Also as I am having a general aneasthetic is it safe to be under with a chest infection. . Im not sure what to do for the best of everyone ?
Hi I’ve been in a similar situation before, during and after a full Laryngectomy my personal opinion, not medical advice from me, is to be upfront with surgical team. I believe keeping it from them could lead to greater difficulties for you and the team. You don’t want the chest infection developing into pneumonia as it did for me and proved very dangerous. I must stress this is not medical advice. I do hope this helps in your decision.
Kind regards
Thankyou for your advice pneumonia is scarey .so i guess they went ahead with the surgery with you anyway ?
ALWAYS tell your team. They can then decide the best course of action. If you turn up on the day with an infection then that slot is lost to everyone and someone who could have taken it is denied it . If they know in advance the slot can be used and they can plan in your later theatre slot.
Generally any potential chest infection and they will not operate. Too risky.
Thankyou Peter,
Thats what I was thinking , I don't want to take away a slot for someone else, I was just hoping if the dr prescribes antibiotics I might be over it in a week but you are both right , I need to keep the team in the loop. I was just hoping to get the biopsy over and done with so its not hanging over me but these things are sent to test us.
