Hi did anyone on the forum have problems swallowing BEFORE diagnosis / treatment , I'm having difficulty swallowing and have gone onto soft food but even drinking is difficult. Sometimes I choke up the food because it won't go down. How did you manage this?  any tips or ideas will be most welcome

  • hi .ime a laryngectomy and when I went through my therapy I lost 6 kilos because it hurt when I swallowed food and drink.a few weeks after my operation . yes it did hurt to swollow b4 my treatment and i still bring food up aven after my opp. dont worry it wont hurt for ever it will soon pass. all the best to you.

  • Hi Sarah

It depends on what is causing it and you don't have a diagnosis yet so it's difficult to advise. Maybe  just stick to soft foods and make them lukewarm? Take your time eating  and drinking and try not to get into a panic. I know it's easier said than done. Do you have your referral appointment yet?

  • Hi Dani yes I saw ENT last Thursday he wants a  biopsy of tongue and adenoid under general aneasthetic which is taking place on the 5th August and wants a head MRI to check lymph nodes in throat and by my ear. Haven't heard when that is yet.

  • Of course. You mentioned that before. Head like a sieve. Won’t be long then you’ll know. Hugs

  • I have massive issues swallowing and eating. Painful and scarey. The tumour is in the back all of my throat. Soft foods  very limited choice. The consultant has told me I will be fitted with a RIG before trearment starts on the 15th Aug otherwise I won't manage.  Teeth out this week to accommodate RT.  A further CT scan because they've spotted something on a adrenal gland!

  • If your tumour is causing pain and swallowing issues as soon as you start treatment you should see an improvement, even in the first week. Hugs
