I had Tonsil Cancer Stage 1, 6 years ago and i am discharged from Royal London 3 months ago. but i am worried i my return somewhere else. I would like to know if i can have a yearly cat scan to put my mind at rest.
Hi Geraldine and welcome. Congratulations on getting this far
By six years you are likely out of danger from lung mets and anything else would be expected to to show symptoms before it showed up on a CT scan. Why don’t you ring your oncology department to reassure you.
Stage 1 is really small. What treatment did you have and were you HPV positive?

I don't believe that is available post discharge. We all worry about reoccurrence and have to deal with it in our own ways. Obviously you could pay for a private scan.
What I would say is that a reoccurrence post successful treatment is quite unlikely, especially after the 5 year discharge point. I did have a reoccurrence and that happened just over a year after my first treatment and did not show on the scans, even when the knew where it was. I do understand your concerns, but for most it is very unlikely.
Thank you Peter but my cousin had the all clear for 12 years but shes got in her bones now. Thats why i am concerned of a return of the cancer some else in my body

What cancer did your cousin have ?
HPV is human papilloma virus which is responsible for 80% of oropharyngeal cancers. It has a much better cure rate

And yes you can have a yearly CT if you pay for it but you would have to have a whole body scan with all the X-rays that entails. I would be suspicious of any private clinic offering that I’m afraid.
Maybe be some sort of counselling might be in order? To help you overcome the quite understandable fear.

My apologies Geraldine. I see you’ve talked to Macmillan about this in previous years. I’ve looked up your older posts. Perhaps there might be some help there again. It’s no fun being on tenterhooks about recurrence
