Stricture in my oesophagus

Hello again, I have recently had a fluoroscopy of my swallow to see why I’m making no progress with swallowing food 14 weeks after radiotherapy finished. It quickly became clear that I have a stricture near the top of my oesophagus which only allows a minute amount through at any time. Also it showed that the epiglottis is not moving as it should. I’m being referred to the ENT consultant to see what can be done to fix this. I wondered if any of you have experienced this and what solutions you had to fix this problem, also how effective the treatment was?
Many thanks in advance for any answers/advice for me.

with best wishes

  • Hi Benny.
So sorry to hear you’re experiencing this. It must be really frustrating. It hasn’t happened to me but there are folk on here who have had this and they have had the stricture dilated. It sometimes has to be repeated. I’m sure your ENT will have the answer for you. It’s not that common but it’s a recognised sequel of RT.
Best of luck. Let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Dani, thank you for your answer. Yes the stricture is almost certainly due to the radiotherapy treatments. . .  it feels better knowing what is causing my difficulty and at least there are ways of treating it
