Hi, following on from a Forum discussion some months ago I made some enquires about acupuncture to help stimulate my saliva. I have today started a 6 week course kindly provided by a local charity and will provide some feedback on my progress. My thanks again to those of you who contributed to the discussion and on youir own experiences of the therapy.

On another point, we are planning a trip to Dubai this winter and possibly to Europe after the school holidays. I have had a look online and read the advice on this site but wondered if anyone else had any recommendations or advice on travel insurance. Thanks in anticipation.

  • Hi John, good luck with the acupunture, I know there have been few people on here who  have benefited from having it. With regards to travel insurance I have used a company named Insurancewith, it was set up by a lady who had once had cancer herself. All the best.

    Regards Ray.

  • Hi John make sure it’s auricular acupuncture that they do. As fir travel insurance I use staysure they will cover me for extended trip up to 90 days in Europe.

  • Hi, just a quick update on my experience of acupuncture to promote more saliva following RT. I have now completed my 6 sessions of treatment which was kindly provded by a local charity. Although my assessment is somewhat subjective, I do feel that my mouth does not feel quite so dry in the mornings so I am happy that I underwent the acupuncture. I have aslo been using pastilles and mouthwash so difficult to be conclusive.

I have also now been prescribed Durophat 5000 by my GP following the privatisation of my dentist. They eventually agreed to my request when I wrote to the practice explaining my situation and providing a copy of a letter from my H&N Consultant and referenced the comments made by contributors to this forum as evidence. My thanks to those who provided their input.

  • Hi John. My experience of acupuncture I’ve documented in my blog. It certainly helped me but it needs maintenance. I had needles for a year. I don’t think I would have made such an astounding recovery without them.

  • Hi John great you’ve got duraphat we need it for rest of our life’s.  I had it from day 1 of diagnosis. If you find it too harsh on odd occasions  there’s one  you can buy online Ora nurse I used it if I have a particularly sore mouth due ti food issues. Then  revert back to duraphat. You need a course of acupuncture to help your saliva glands started.
i also have a fluoride varnish applied in my teeth every 3 months at dentist make sure it’s applied where the teeth are near the gums as that’s where decay csn start if we’re not careful.

  • Hazel/Raz,

Thanks for this and I have copied a link to this product. Yes, I have just completed a course of accupuncture and I am now deciding whether to continue it. I did have some coating applied to the bottom of one tooth which has some exposed tissue but will ask about the varnish at my next visit.

    Thanks again
