Dental hygienist appointment pre-treatment?

Good morning,

I have an appointment at the dentist tomorrow for x-rays and to see the dental hygienist so I'm going to call the dentist this morning to ask if it's okay to do just a few days before treatment starts. Any advice appreciated! It's an appointment that was made months ago, before diagnosis. I'm just wondering whether it may be a bit close to treatment, don't want to create even more trauma in my mouth!!

Thanks, Helen x

  • Hi Helen didn’t you have x rays when your teeth were checked pre treatment ? If so wouldn’t think you would need another. If not can’t see it making any difference ,I had my dental x Ray 2 weeks prior to treatment starting wouldn’t recommend having one straight after You always ask dentist but the small amount if radiation won’t make treatment any worse

  • Hi Helen.  I took myself of to hygienist just before my radiotherapy started. I also had a fluoride varnish put on.  I checked that this was ok to do with my CNS and it was.  I am glad I went into radiotherapy with my teeth really clean as my gums swelled and it became difficult to really clean them thoroughly as the treatment went on.  I returned to hygienist 6 weeks after my treatment.  Even being very fussy I still got a minor gum infection that I needed antibiotics for.  Good luck with everything. I sm 9 months or so post rt now snd feeling good.
    best wishes.   Lizzie

  • hi hazel - yes that was the hospital dentist .. I could ask my dentist to get x-rays from her, but they'll be slightly different now as missing 1 wisdom tooth Smiley I'll double-check now.

  • Hi Lizzie - that's a good point, I'm going to call ahead just so the hygienist is fully aware. As you say, going into treatment with a clean mouth is for the best!

I will definitely enquire about the fluoride varnish while I'm there and may be one for the future, in case I don't get on with the prescription toothpaste.

PS - so happy to hear that you're feeling good after your treatment xx

Hi Helen. I’ve mentioned a few times that according to Colgate you have Duraphat or a varnish. Not both. My dentist and oncologist say that it is ok. So I now have both. I have a varnish every three months. Good idea to have one and a clean before treatment. I wouldn’t have more X-rays. You are going to get 60+Gy of them pretty soon.

  • Hi Dani - Yes, I agree, I'm going to say no to x-rays. I'll provide my dentist with the hospital dentist's details - she can share my recent x-ray.

I will definitely enquire about the flouride varnish and see whether they can fit it in tomorrow, or get an appointment for later. My oncologist mentioned that some people prefer to only use Duraphat in the evening and prefer a sensitivity paste in the morning (depends on their teeth) and that flouride varnish is another good option.

  • Hi - Had a good meeting with my dentist today and she's happy to see me every 3 months as long as I want to! I've had a scale and polish, ready for Monday - best tooth forward and all that! No x-rays needed. My wisdom tooth extraction has healed nicely too.

I've now got to get through a 7th birthday party at a soft play for the next 2 and a half hours - so I've braced myself! No pun intended Smiley

For years I couldn’t tolerate Duraphat for longer than a week or so at a time. My go to toothpaste has been Oranurse which is mint and SLS free.
I still use Oranurse in the morning, brushing before breakfast.
Duraphat is finally ok at lunchtime and in the evening.
